4x4 Options

Looking at getting a 4x4 (ute or wagon) for the beach. Any advise about what to get, what to avoid???

Depends on where you are and which beaches you wish to drive on.

In Wanganui, so sandy beachs of South Beach, Santoft etc but also down Wellington.

My big Nissan is awesome tows anything and cheap as chips to run. I would be tempted to put wider tyres on next time though . The high roof is good because I can store the rods up out of the way and its long enough to sleep in.

Nissans are popular. Safari, patrol terrano, pathfinder (my truck). Toyota Hilux surfs also. Depends on your budget I guess.

Budget not huge around $5-6k. What about auto vs manual? Never driven a 4x4 auto.What they like on the soft sand?

Auto's can get a bit hot if they don't have an extra cooler but the auto's have a much smoother up shift in soft conditions.
If you want to look at a van early 90's Delicas are hard to beat with big round boots.
Don't need agressive tread more of an open road type.

If you get a Mitsi Van throw a set of Hilux wheels/tyres on it. (you can usually pic them up cheap on TM from all the 4WD nutters building monster trucks). Same stud pattern but bigger/wider gets you more ground clearance and a wider footprint

I got a safari for 2,800 off trade me str8 6 4.2 best buy yet and not expensive.

Go for a LWB high roof they tow better and you can sleep in the back . I have my rods stored in the roof above the windows, I took the grab handles off and made brackets to hold the rods.

LWB got it to tow my boat and access most beaches. even being able to get 100m further to the beach makes it easier with a lot of gear.

Toyota Surf with a 1KZ motor -auto go any were,sleep in it easy best wagon for around Wellington S/Coast and the beaches- and over the east with the soft sand and gravel,also very good for for heading over farm land to remote areas, take mine along Santoft and other areas all the time with no problems and the beaches- sleep in it easy, I would not suggest a Nissian/Delica or Mitus for the WGTN region- around the beaches up here Foxton/Santoft and so forth they would not be a problem (just my opinion)

stay clear of mazda proceed very thirsty and the autos gets very hot and they crack heads very easy
