The crab situation

With the feild weekend looming I'm wondering about how the fishing is going? Now this crap weather has left us I'm wondering whether the crabs have returned?
Its been awsome in the last few weeks to be able to throw out a bait on the bottom and know it would last. Has this cold patch stuffed it? Also I see on Chads page he's gleefully featuring a red cod. Are they on the move here now?

I pulled 5 snapper on monday evening at Whakaki. There has been a speight of big ones caught at the car park, ranging from 73-86cm in length.

Gurnard are on the rise, opoho to nuhaka, and in larger numbers middle of that area.

Get amongst it !

PS: that red cod was caught in Napier haha, by Simon.

Rex, I fished Marine Parade yesterday with not a sign of a crab. I either had (a) a take that stripped the bait, (b) I caught a fish, (c) the bait (anchovy) returned to the beach untouched.

Sadly the same must be said of your second question, unfortunately no sign of a red cod either. I hope it won't be long.

Thanks Chad, Simon the cod catcher eh. We'll all be doing it soon.

I dont mind red cod Hangler if truth be told. They fry up in batter as good as anything. And I'm pleased to hear the crabs are absent. Thats great news,

Now all this really puts me in two minds. I got 5 gurns at bayview last time I was out but can I do that again? If they're turning up North then it could be worth a trip... Or not

15-16-17 arvo's. the whole lot. Early to mid arvo, rough as hell sea's too

Going to head to Tahanui, very shortly Rex, I will let you know what it's like, sea and fishing will only improve by the weekend, larger tidel flows, better tides and flatter water

No crab action at Awatoto this arvo.

I see the Dep't of Public Restrictions has taken it upon themselves to block off vehicle access to the beach via the Quarry car park.

You can drive around the problem of course, or come in from the other end. How long before they ban all vehicle access?

No crabs or Kahawai, or anything else this morning. Nice sunrise though

There were Kahawai feeding and birds diving at Awatoto yesterday apparently

I sore them yesterday afternoon there working well out. First five casts five Kahawai on bait and more followed. Gurnard were caught along the parade too. Id be picking Mahanga to produce a few Snappers this weekend, ocean beach could throw up some good Gurnard, not sure how much weed may be present there tho. Where did you fish this morning Chris?

Same place as last night - several cars already there when I arrived at 5.30. Simon got a couple of Kahawai and cudas.

Good luck to all Pania fishers this weekend. There seem to be some good clues in the posts above and a couple of RED HERRINGS but you can sort them out. If I was fishing (Im not) I would be looking at fishing Mahanga or Tahaenui.

Not sure about Herrings? did catch a lonely gurnard this avo returned for another day, and spoke to a local who had witnessed several schoalies and big Gurnard caught along ferguson road just two days ago. Encouraging all the same. Don't forget your wheres wally book and your magnifying glass
