NZACA Concern.

It has been quite an eye opener to read the threads that have recently appeared on site regarding the interests of the NZACA. Chad, in his threads, has asked for feedback and opinion. I have no time for destructive criticism but constructive ideas are an entirely different matter.

On top of the list must be the question: does the governing body have the support of those if represents? I believe reality suggests it does not.

I would question where surfcasting and fishing from boats has any common ground other than the end result of catching fish. Gear, rigs and the area fished are all totally different so it is difficult to find a comparison. Distance casting. Again there can be a question raised as to where the two; surfcasting/distance have an meaningful relationship with each other. Very frequently a larger fish is caught just behind the breakers, so whilst the ability to cast 200 metres plus is great for one's vanity, this ability has little bearing on fish landed? Surely that is what fishing is all about. To further this point, casting a single lead without any representation of even a simple rig plus a non aero dynamic attachment to imitate a bait again offers no real guide as to the caster's angling prowess.

This has been a complicated lead up to my question: is it possible the NZACA simply has too much on its plate? There can be little doubt from the many comments on this site there are many matters in need of address as they are drawing flack. Would it not make sense to split the work load into an association that represents surfcasting. Another association for those who wish to sail the briny, and then a third body to look after the interest of those attracted to distance casting?

My belief is based on one premise: better to have an association whose work is solely for those who actually go to the shoreline and use our far superior skills (when compared to boaties) to catch our fish. Our needs are different, access for one plus the need to promote surfcasting for what it is, one of New Zealand's leading participant sports.

Reading through the remits Chad has prepared he has not made it clear whether these changes are propositions or simply discussion documents. Speaking only for myself I have a concern: does the NZACA take on too much? If this is food for thought I would take it one step further: would a body solely representing surfcasters do a better job having only one sports code to look after?

If a surfcasting association were to be invoked and promoted as having only those who fish from the shore as it's only interest. Now is there a possibility it may encourage some of the 90% of anglers who don't belong to the NZACA could just be encouraged to join? It must be admitted that at present there is little to attract them and from a post made by Phill, it would seem at present the NZACA financial standing is to say the least on shaky ground.

There is not one hint of criticism in this post, it contains but one idea that is, or could be, of a very constructive nature. As a surfcaster I have no interest in what they are catching from boats because those fish are seldom taken from the shore. I also hold little interest in distance casting unless there is a 4/0 hook with an attendant suicidal anchovy impaled for safe keeping.

Fish are caught anywhere from the shore not only just past the breakers .

Being able to cast a long way is just another tool to be used if and when conditions require it.

Once again let me clarify some points here. The NZACA is the Parent body. Under their umberella is: Casting, Surf fishing, Boating, Kayaking and also Trout fishing. We represent all at the National level and as Affilliated clubs in many areas. I'm afraid we are at odds again Hangler ol' Buddy. Though your thoughts are of a constructive nature they are in fact, based on numbers, incorrect. The reason being. Of the approx thousand members you have only a total of five who are represented here. Most of those, including yourself, are not members of the NZACA. So to be fair I question your Statement that the "Majority are not happy with their parent body". I have feilded a lot of phone calls since last being on here. Many from people I don't know but all in support of the NZACA.
Also. The Financial position of the NZACA. This is the end of our financial year. Funding is always low at this time. Our Financial year starts 1st June. Affiliation fees are due from then. There is also other funding due so don't get all caught up and paranoid about the financial situation of the NZACA as it is a non issue and whilst it is always good to have extra income, which is being addressed, I can assure you there is no concern.

I must apologise if my comment about the NZACA being ( broke) it came from information circulated by the NZACA . I know there is money coming in.
My posting was designed to try and get you guys to think outside the square. We as a group must come up with ways of funding this organisation to allow it to promoted etc.
The time has gone where sponsors have the money or the time to spread around there commitments.
I truly believe the Chad,Yoey, Hangler myself and others are all singing from the hymn book we are just on different pages.

One of the credits I received with my writing was the ability to be able to explain things in simple, easy to understand language. It is pretty obvious from the comments so far posters have read the words without understanding the actual idea.

May I ask those who feel they wish to comment to reconsider what I have suggested, this is not a criticism of the present NZACA, it is a constructive suggestion on how surfcasters could possibly be served better by that body.

An elected body, or sub committee, that works solely in the interests of surfcasters is far more likely to draw support and success from those who participate, than a governing body that is constantly sidetracked into areas that are not of a surfcaster's concern. That sub committee, if necessary, could then take their recommendations to the NZACA based on solid ground. Even more so as they would have gathered all their information from those people who really matter: surfcasting participants.

The same could be said for those who are seriously interested in distance casting, let them have a sub committee consisting of interested parties, who can then take recommendations back to the NZACA.

With no disrespect to Chad, he is only treating this event as a fun event, surely it would be better handled by those who take it seriously. Then let them decide the way events should be run, and take their recommendations to the NZACA for ratification.

Im upfront, my thoughts and processes are all out in the public, my neck is on the line with my name attached to it, no alias, just my name.

I have been incredibly constructive, i've put everything into this, and im trying to make most happy, you would have no bloody idea at all what I have done, or what I have achieved, but unlike you, I don't tell everyone how good I am, I just keep trucking along and pushing people like you to the side, or we would never move forward.

You are right, I do treat the event like fun mate, I enjoy every second of fishing and fun is apart of that. If I'm not having fun, then im not living mate, and if thats the case I may as well join you, think about that bro, pull the stick out your arse and move forward..............

There are "allot" of guys working behinds the scenes helping me, and to you guys, I really appreciate it, its awesome. Thanks for your feedback.

Hangler have you ever been to a Nationals?? They are fun or no one would go. Your ignorance and lack of knowledge about NZACA matters and your willingness to put your 2 cents in is astounding to say the least!! Did you even read the proposal??Pretty sure you didnt read it and/or understand it?? Boats have been involved in the NZACA for as long as I've been a member and we now also have kayaks and jetskis aswell.

Hi Neil, first of all, Hangler is simply offering advice, extremely sound advice from where I sit. Why does it matter if he is a NZACA member? Is this a NZACA members closed discussion thread?

Chadd I believe Hangler was referring to your own words used to describe the casting "I believe the casting for most is a "fun" event, this is to remain." Were these not your words?

I think if you both took time to read and comprehend Hanglers comments instead of taking them as a personal attack you would both benefit, as would your agendas.

Hangler please keep the ideas coming, I for one do take time to look a bit further into your ideas and can see value in them.

NZACA member or not, what difference does it make?

I find it ironic how "feedback, thoughts and ideas" are always requested, then when they are offered (and some great ideas I might add) the are scoffed at.

It seems to me that the one thing that is needed is some bright ideas, backed by some bright people. All that is needed is some bright people to recognize these, support them and forward them to your NZACA rep.

Mate, doesn't matter how I read that, it's insulting. Allot of time from allot of people is going into this. The whole event is a fun event, or there would be no point in fishing it. I don't go fishing to be a grumpy bugger. I go to enjoy it, it should be seen as a "fun" and exceptional event.

He needs to put the bowl and wooden spoon away and use his talent in a better way.

Chad it is not an insult. You perceive it as an insult because you don't like Hangler, simple as that, it's plain to see.

In addition you obviously didn't read what I was referring to where you state that most people treat this as a fun event in regards to the casting section. Do you take the casting section of the NZACA nats as seriously and competitively as the fishing section of the NZACA nats?

This was what Hangler appears to be referring to when he made his comment about "fun". i.e someone who takes the casting as seriously as you take the fishing should be running the casting.

Seriously for someone that is supposedly open to feedback and ideas you have a strange way of showing it.

Do yourself a favour and lighten up, don't take every sentence with your name in it as a personal insult, quite frankly it is childish and devalues what you are trying to achieve.

Rest easy champ, I will save you the shame of digging up any number of direct personally insulting remarks you have made to Hangler or anyone else to question or appose your point of view.

Your post above (including quote) . There you go again, is that really enough for you to declare that I have a stance? Would you be suggesting I would support Hangler no matter what he said? The answer is no, I judge each case on its merit, something you would benefit from.

It's all okay though, because he was and still is one of a few voices of reason on here.

In summary I simply don't think you understand any of what Hangler has suggested in this thread.

Hangler has some great points above. Points are very constructive and well deserve considering. I appreciate getting feedback from non-members of the NZACA in particular, as it is those people the NZACA really need.

Anyway, moving on. There has been many great points raised and there is allot to consider. Thanks for the feedback.

I've read this thread twice, in case I misread something. Here's what I see. The thread was started as a proposal that a surfcaster thinks that distance casting and boat fishing should be scrapped from the NZACA and the nationals because its not a pure, or skilled form of fishing, unlike surfcasting.

I, myself am an avid and very passionate surfcaster. I'm not an extreme distance caster, but I have seen it in action and done it myself. I've gained an appreciation of the skill involved, because quite honestly, there very definitely is. Learning to use various casting techniques and accuracy is not a simple task, and I'd challenge anyone who has not tried it to have a go.

There has also been mention that boat fishing contains little or no skill. Once again, I beg to differ. I live in the Bay of Islands, and can assure you not every boat fisherman who rips out to sea gains anything near a bag limit. Just like shore fishing, there are many skills to learn, such as where and how to approach reefs, the best way to drift, understanding tide and currents, where fish are most likely to hold up.

The NZACA are a body that support these skills as a representation of what our sport can hold. Chad's idea to seperate these into individual sections and recognise them all as feats in their own individual fields, as well as incorporating a rock fishing section to cater to a new breed of shore fishermen is far from removing the sport from what someone sees as its poor roots. People have been fishing from boats world wide since they were able to hack one out of a tree.

Like I said before, I'm passionate about surfcasting. To me its a pure form of fishing, and I enjoy the challenges it brings me. However, that doesn't in any way mean that any other recognised form of fishing is any less challenging for those that choose to practice it.

Distance casting is yet another form of skill that is measured as part of a national competition. Some will be great at it, others not so great. Just as some people are great at boat fishing, and some are great at surfcasting, and yet again some are great at the skills required to be successful at rock fishing. To attempt to compare them in any way is a naive point of view in my opinion. To disregard any one of them as unimportant and impure is a fairly ignorant view. Each has its own skill and merit, and I for one support Chad's proposal whole heartedly. How the NZACA view and alter it is up to the Executive Committee to decide. They, after all are elected affiliated members to represent all within the organisation. If you're not prepared to join the NZACA and provide feedback to them I'd suggest you're far from qualified to shoot them down.

Jase if you wish to quote me please use my words and not your quite poor interpretation.

Nowhere have I suggested boat fishing and distance casting should be removed from the NZACA. I have suggested, and quite clearly, these should be looked after by various sub committees who would then report back to the NZACA with suggestions for ratification. That is the normal way for a governing administrative body to handle multi facet input. The NZACA would still be ultimately responsible for the running of our sport.

I trust you are not pinning your suggestion that boat fishing has little or no skill on me. I have suggested, that surfcasting is a superior skill, a totally different matter indeed. The rigs used by boat anglers are generally of a simple nature, rarely including the comprehensive, quite specific designs the keen surfcaster now takes for granted.

I agree completely but I suggest what you have listed are boating skills not fishing skills. The skills I was alluding to were rigs and bait presentation, reading the conditions, identifying gutters and holes plus the ability to place the bait in the required position.

As for your final comment about shooting the NZACA down, can you kindly point me in the direction where I have made such an assertion. Threads have arrived on this site asking for comment, ideas, suggestions and feedback, I believe I have been totally constructive and have acted exactly as the writers requested.

If suggestions on taking an innovative, somewhat slightly different approach are to be treated with disdain, then it begs the question: why ask for comment and feedback in the first place?

That says in your own words 3 seperate associations!!
"Our far superior skills" But you've said in other arguements that we are not an elitist group yet here your saying we are. Change of heart??

Jase's interpretation is pretty much on the button for what you've posted.

The various parts of the NZACA ARE looked after by exec members with the Nationals and distance casting being seperate portfolios.

We could play this game all year. In your opinion those skills required by boat fishermen are boating skills. I see them as skills essential to success in that chosen field. I also see your ability to tie rigs that are "comprehensive, quite specific designs the keen surfcaster now takes for granted" as another essential skill. I'm qualified to reach that conclusion simply because I make my own also. However, without the knowledge I have in where to place those rigs, how to approach those locations or even which rig to use my success would falter at every step. May I also point out that those rigs do not determine your fishing prowess, ability or success without the ability and skill required to use them in a manner that enables a successful result. That, my friend is fishing.

I'm going to leave it there and wish you all good fishing.

Jase, in future I will assess my surfcasting to have up-skilled by at least tenfold. This by reason I can drive my car to the beach and park it in such a way it keeps the distance I am required to walk to a minimum, whilst keeping me as close as possible to my desired fishing position. I believe that equates quite nicely to your thoughts on parking a boat in the correct position, especially when taking GPS and depth sounders into consideration.

James, I am delighted you will keep a record of my postings, kindly remind me when I may deviate from my written word. You may note in later posts the word associations was altered to read sub committees made up of NZACA members, totally in keeping with the suggested changes.

Now ponder your positive thoughts on this: All these remits regarding rule changes should have been posted to the NZACA association at least three months before the AGM, preferably longer. After a quick perusal the executive should then have sent copies to all registered clubs and affiliated members asking for comments, this to help find an agreeable consensus.

Approximately one month before the AGM, the secretary should place those suggested rule changes into the meeting's agenda as 'notices of motion'. This should include the proposer's name and the name of the person who seconded the motion ... or if proposed by a club then the club's name should be recorded.

Those motions should then be read to those in attendance, preferably by the proposer giving him or her a chance to explain the reasons behind the proposed changes. This also gives those against the opportunity to air their views. If amendments are not forthcoming, the rule changes should be voted on individually.

None of that is radical new thinking, it is the standard procedure for any AGM, especially when changes to rules are of the agenda.

Anyway, it would seem all is well in hand. All the suggested changes are being well received, and those who are not happy with the changes are hardly likely to express an opinion judging by what has happened to the threads on this site. Phill's concern regarding changes to casting being a prime example.

Gosh you lot take things a bit seriously at times. You’re pontificating and snarling at the random opinions of 70 year old pensioner with a spelling fixation who thinks the ocean is overrun by gurnard and gleefully eats tope. If you can’t tell the difference between a rod and a kontiki just stick up a picture any way is a motto we should all live by. Each to their own I say and good luck to them.

One of the problems of asking for an opinion is that more often than not someone will give it to you.

Mr Hangler has quite rightly expressed an opinion which is he is absolutely entitled to do. He was compelled to do so under the conventions social networking and the necessity to hear one’s own voice. This is the purpose of this web site. You have to remember that when you read an opinion, constructiveness is in the eye of the beholder. Meanings sometimes vary. So does how you choose to respond........... I suggest you push pass the negativity and get on with it without taking it too seriously. For instance.....

Clearly the NZACA doesn’t have enough committees and should immediately form a subcommittee with the view to initiating a set of sub committees to administrate and vindicate the formation of various groups of anglers pursuant to section C, clause A sub clause iii. In accordance with proposed remit this body shall forthwith become these bodies and be subsequently known as body A,B , C and D . or any other alphabetical unit as is applicable. This is good stuff ... I can see the hair on Yoey’s head greying as I type.

Despite this foray into bureaucracy, Mr Hangler has made some valid points? In particular do the NZACA understand what its members want? And it’s a fair question to ask. I think they are trying very hard to, and I’m pretty sure Chad’s idea’s come with the same sentiment. Everyone is trying to drag the angling community into the 21st century. They’re not doing it for their own entertainment, they’re doing because they love fishing and the very survival of the sport is under threat from apathy and greed. The cure is a bigger vibrant NZACA with more members which equals more support. Good on all of them for trying is all I can say.
