Using swellmap

Hey everyone, since I've fallen in love with ocean beach (wairarapa) I've been trying to figure out how to have an accurate idea of what the weather is going to be like. This sunday the weather looks pretty good, and I was having a look at swellmap. Only thing is i'm not sure if what it's telling me is good or not. It says that the conditions are good aparently, wind pretty low. It's the swell bit that confuses me.

It says a wave of 2m early on and a swell of about 2.2m, and that decreases throughout the day which I have to assume is good. Are the 2m waves and 2.2m swells good? At what point would you say you wouldn't go? E.g 3m? 4m? Cheers for any help, always much appreciated.

Sometimes a bit of swell can lead to some very productive fishing but personally I wouldnt go unless it was a metre or less. I dont know Ocean Beach though so cant really say what you can expect. The Surfing tables give you a good outline of where the shore waves are heading and it doesnt look to flash with 3m swells for sunday.

2m is fairly big at ocean.

contact the Lake Ferry motor camp-the new manager is a fisherman,
Also head to Ngawi and meet one of the locals at the Boating/fishing club-

alot easier just to make a phone call, on that coast down that way I would not bother fishing a 1 + swell as just to dangerous.These pics are from an outing I arranged- 1 -1.2 meter swell,with the deep drop off the water breaks at your feet and runs up the beach along way

Great pics Scuzzy. Its a hell of a beach. Wellyfisher. Have you tried further up the west coast?

We find the swell map/ site very useful on the west coast , check out the swell map in useful links on our retail site, I can work it out so it must be easy to use.

Hey Jase how are you? No I havn't tried anywhere other than ocean beach just yet. Mainly cause the hour drive is about right, can't really justify the expense of further with a 4yr old and another one on the way in august =)

You might find you are looking at the surfing forecast on swellmap which well tell you that good conditions are huge waves, that's the opposite of what you want for fishing. Change it to the forecast maps tab up the top. I wouldn't go to ocean beach if it was over 1m. Try this site out too http://www.marineweather.co.nz/forecasts/wairarapa-south

Congrats mate. I hear ya with the justification. I had none 2 years ago, then acquired 3 and now have #4.

. Ideally that coast would be under .75m for any decent fishing. You can get some good fishing spots within an hour of Welly mate. Have you joined the club yet? You'll do well to go see the boys at WSAC. Lots of skill and knowledge in there

No I havn't joined yet, have been thinking about it all year, might do it soon or a little while after the next baby. Don't want to join and then have no time to go =)
