Love em or Hate em ...

Okay, a genuine inquiry. Living in Hastings and enjoying great success on Marine Parade, where would local surfcasters recommend to be the 'hot spot' for red cod.

I appreciate most anglers try to avoid them, well would they kindly share the secret of where they avoid, and I will do my best to lower the local population.

I know I can catch them on a long-line, on Marine Parade, but as yet they have avoided all my best endeavours with the surfcaster. Also may I ask what would be considered as the 'never fail' bait for the little rascals? Whenever I am surfcasting my standard bait is anchovy, well perhaps it's here I am going wrong. Also, would fishing a smaller hook than a 4/0 also help?

Ive caught them on all the main beaches around Napier. No more or less in any one area really.

Te Awanga straight would be a good place to start. I've caught a few along there.
As far as baits go, I've caught them on pretty much anything. Pilchard, Skipjack, even Squid.
They have big mouths so hook size shouldn't be a problem.
I would suggest fishing the bait on the bottom though. Floats might put the bait out of the lazy buggers reach

Always caught a lot of them by the old outflow at the clive treatment plant

I have found squid has always worked really well for them. But when I've had one line out with squid for them, and another with mussel etc, they've always taken both but the squid more often.

Te Awanga seems to be the place at the moment. Seems to a few at Awatoto too, including that monster pulled out on the weekend that was a new Pania club record. Now that was a man eating red cod of some distinction.

seem to take oily bait xtra well only prob, spiny dogs luv it to ! te-hori.
