Went out a couple of days ago trying out a different softbait. Used berkley 3" smelt minnows and pulled in six small/medium sized kahawai within half and hour. Pulled in some on consecutive casts, good fun on my lighter softbait combo, was a nice change from red cod and spineys for sure.

I've also finally joined wsac so look forward to meeting any of you on here who are members.

TRy the wharf where Bartons used to be with your softbaits. Ive had quite a few gurnard off there. The softies can catch anything!

Welcome to WSAC Wellyfisher.

Yeah there were big work ups of Yakkas last sunday on the WSAC Winter Pairs outing at Ocean Beach, everyone got at least one each, fun stuff.

That wharf is no go at the moment, they are building new apartments there.

Mirimar Wharf then that has offered more species on soft baits but less gurnard.

I'm quite enjoying the softbaiting Gary, currently using 5kg berkley fireline and 15 pound mono as the trace. Would you go higher than 5kg for rocky/weedy territory or should that be sufficient?

Increase the weight,decrease the distance. Its up to you really.The braid will cut a lot of weed for you and it usually tests heavier than stated. I use 6 or 8lb most of the time and find it ideal. If you dont use bright coloured line give that a try next fill. It will buy you a few extra fish just because you can see whats happening.
I have had barracouta and kahawai off the wall at NIWA too pretty flat bottom but fish are passing there all the time.
