Snapper 1000

Yehaaa! Off to the Snapper 1000 this weekend. I have my new weed cutting braid line, weed slicing sinkers (Moa's), a garden rake, Wind deflector, steel umbrella, surf stopping oil and angler repellant. Should be good to go.

Looking forward to a nice quiet night with flat seas and big snapper and no weed.

I think we are all still to buggered to talk . There was few fish caught biggest of 6.2kg , bloody good adventure fishing was a little secondary to the social side of things . I will try to get. List of results unless someone has a list they can post.

The fishing conditions were not too good, weed weed and sum more weed plagued us basically non stop. Hard work and driving up and down beach paid off eventually. I got a 1.8kg and 3.1 kg snapp, witch got me 7th place.

Was another top comp with the conditions as has been the norm since the first comp!! Weed with a chance of wind + swell, water colour marginal thick beef stew yet suprizingly always fishy!!

Top 10 snapper 2.18-6.7kg. 80 anglers, 160 rods, 19 fishos weighed 40+ fish.
I got lucky with 6th and 9th place, great prizes as always and Ill be up there next year!!

No excuses, just get out there!!

I caught weed and more weed and cunningly thew it back in so Panzer could catch it. And he did!
A strike at two thirty had my attention but turned out to b a small tree. Then a kahawai but no snapper for me.
Awesome event, count on me for next year.

Sounds like I am not the only one having a bad run of luck in the snapper front gary, just got home from fishing Whiritoa my son did bloody well for his first time on a surfcaster he got a small kahawai and got good bites through out the day I got one almighty snapper hit on my rod and that was the only excitement i got all day was to see the fin nor buckle over with two good hard bucks only for fish to let go and send the rod flinging hard back in the rod holder and caused it to bounce around bought line in bait was still there but a fair few tentacles missing off the pink and white octy skirt I was using ironically my son had exactly the same octy skirt on his line too but I let him use the penn 850 and I took the shimano (I think the shimano is cursed) mate of mine turned up to fish the dusk with me and he got nothing either he reckoned it was unusual for the fish not to start hitting like they normally do. better luck next time I guess.

Did you have your drag set tight or lose fin nor?

had it relatively loose (just enough so current would not take any line out) rex as I like the fish to be able to get a bit of a run to give it time to get that bait and time to grab my rod out of holder plus I suspect that the hooks that I was supplied are a bit small which could have allowe dht fish to spit the hook(suspect they are 4/0) when I got selected for the tackle test thing for the trokar hooks by kilwell, but what ever hit that line yesterday the strike was hard and fast enough to make me biff my cup of tea and biscuit with a big oh shit as the rod damn near went 90 degrees the missus heard the drag give a short scream and that woke her up lol.

Bugger. Its a case of you'll never know eh. Sounds very snappery tho. That 10kg one I recently caught was on a 4/0 gamakatsu circle hook and on a very loose drag. Went straight into the corner of its mouth and wasnt going anywhere. Its an interesting argument the one about whether to have a loose or tightish drag. I'm a very loose drag convert these days
