Daiwa Cross cast Baitrunner

New reel time, maybe a Daiwa Cross cast Baitrunner would be worth a look. Longcast spool,and SPARE spool, light weight, at around 250 notes good value for money.

Googled it and they do look good. Same as my windcast but with a baitrunner feature. If its at that money its worth a look surely?

I rate Diawa, I am just sick of their handle unwinding themselves. All the bearing take a hammering, but their biggest fault at present are the handles, they could be allot better, lastly is the drag nob, they have to be really looked after other wise small bits of sand and grit jam it and cause them to lock, the clicker goes out fast too. Over all not bad, and at that price its a good buy, but value for money id take an ultegra any day.

Have to admit to being a Daiwa fan I have a couple of 40 plus year old fixed spools that still work well. The new Crosscasts and Windcasts look good and are priced well also.
My SL30SH SLX is also very good but my 7HT is even gooder.

I have a soft spot for daiwa my very first reel was a left hand drive daiwa RA7700 I hated it because I am right handed. But after being reunited with penn reels and getting my first shimano I can not see myself turning back after having a really good hard think about it.

Yeah im actually really surprised with the feedback. Guys are really loving their cheep penns to surfcast with. I couldn't think of anything worse, they are best served as paper weights or rock reels. Short spools to hinder casting and they are heavy. Sure they are built quite well, and the drag is reasonable, but they are not a great design for surfcasting.

Everyone has thier preferences and deservedly have the right to show preference to certain brands I like using my penn and shimano reels but I will honestly say the penn always gets put on my rod and the wife gets the shimano. and I have no problem getting out a decent distance with the 850 I do not know exactly how many meters I confidently cast but all I know is I can get over the back with it when having a good hair day. The penn sargus appears to have a long cast spool but sadly not available over here eventhough I wish they were.

I've got a couple of the Ultegras that Chad suggested earlier. I've had them for nearly a year now and have found them great, the drags are incredibly smooth. They don't have a baitrunner function on them tho if that's your thing.
They also came with a spare spool which I thought was unusual for Shimano.

Sorry Fin-nor if I gave the impression I was knocking you for using Penn, I wasn't intending to. I am just suprised at the amount of support they do get. On my facebook page, a great number of anglers are using them and those that are have nothing but praise for them. Thats great for Penn as they had been out of the game for quite some time. Well all use different reels for different reasons, mostly dictated by application or budget. But regardless of budget, those reels are getting rave reviews.

As Carl mentioned, it was great the shimano have finally got a reel with a spare spool. I am not a fan of double drags-baitrunner feature, it keeps it nice and simple with less issues to go wrong.

Ah not at all Chad you weren't knocking me mate I just took it as a bit of toungue in cheek ribbing as most fishos do to each other lol so all is good I don't go getting upset over a ford Vs holden type debate like I have seen some people do.
Believe it or not the only reason I managed to afford another penn spinfisher was the fact I found a clearance company selling the 850 on trade me for $90 so found it too hard to hit the back button and had full support of the wallet manager I have a mate that fishes with mitchell 488's which he got off of ebay on his two powersticks and has a penn 950 as his spare reel like me he just loves old school stuff.

The bait runner feature will only give you problems if you drown them often. Like most reels they dont like saltwater much. Certainly the Penn spinfishers will tolerate a bit more abuse, due to their simpleness and robustness. The Ultegras are an awsome bit of kit all right , great for dominating big kingfish runs without the outlay of big biscuits to buy a Daiwa Saltiga or Shimano Stella, engineering excellence

On the subject of Penn reels doe's anyone have a spacer that goes between the handle and the bearing on a USA made 7500ss.

Probably have one at HQ Phill if you give Jase a rind he will hunt it out for you. Go to the USA Penn site for a part number.

Some of you may not be aware that the new Penn Spinfisher V model reels are O ringed for water resistance and have drags of over 20kgs in the 850, 950, and 1050SSV models.
There are three live liner (bait runner) models in the 450SSVLL, 650SSVLL and the 850SSVLL.

Time and technology moves on. These are New Penn improvements and do not apply to the old SSM models which are still available.

Your right fin-nor I really like my old Mitchell reels & my 16'Powersticks.But they aren't gonna last forever so have just ordered a ABF90 to try.
That 950 might be looking for a loving home if the new reel works out.Hoping its a bit more robust than the 80 model,that only lasted 12 months.Couple of rays then a reasonable king finished it off.

The okumas are fairly good Widegap there is a couple of surf reels I really want to try in the penn range which is the battle and the sargus but not available here in NZ sadly. They have some nice specs and appear to have long cast spools on them too.

fin-nor I Was looking at the sargus last night ,not that expensive at around $100 NZD + P&P.Didn't look at spec;s just pricing tho.Can check the other out for you too if ya want ?

I spend alot of time drooling over the sargus and battle reels on Ebay along with those re released Z series penns(they look like your mitchells)but the price they are selling for in the US they are dearer than a spinfisher SSV was kind of hoping that the sargus and battle models would eventually make it into new zealand through pure fishing for warranty support purposes as all self imported products are not supported by local agents when it comes to something going pear shaped during use. Those sargus and battle reels have upto 15Kg of drag on them and one of the models has 6+1 Ball bearings but the long cast spools on those two is everything I have ever wanted in a penn eggbeater reel even though I know I am punching out to 100 meters with the spinfisher and probably a tad more with the shimano and there is braid going to be going on both reels to top them up to full capacity after this weekend.
