Hey guys, just wondering if i could get a bit of advice on where to fish in Mahia. Me and a couple mates are heading up there next week for a whole week of boating, diving and fishing.I've never fished there before but at the moment i am thinking of fishing snapper rock for Kingfish as well as gurnard, might also try Mahanga. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
On another note what's the paua scene like there. I have recently started free diving and really excited about it,does anybody know where i could possibly go to pick up a couple.
Cheers

Sounds like you are on to it already. Blacks Beach on the otherside is worth some time if the weather pushes you that way. Cant help with the paua sorry. The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Paua situation is pretty average up there, warmer water and a lot of smaller paua. Crayfish on the other hand are very plentiful.

at the southern end of the beach there are rocks you can fish off and be good for diving at low tide the ground between the hill and the out side rocks is dry but when the tide turns to high tide it comes in quite quick so you well only get about 3 hours on the rocks a 4 wheeler would be good if diving whatch out for sharks.

Been catching some good snapper off mahanga, betweem the car park and the first blow out, although its not much of a blow out anymore, its over grown, good to see.
For kingfish, we have been doing really well, although mainly on the water. Waikokopu has allot of kingfish, mainly 5-9kg but there is a few 15kg plus fish in there regularly. Also been a few smaller sholies early in the morn. There is a huge school of moki in here at the moment, if you want them, cross the old rail bridge ( yes it requires a short walk, so get off ya chuff) and fish the clear patch in close early morning or late evening into dark. Cray, mussel ect.... good fishing.
Snapper rock has not been ideal weather wise, however the bay is jam packed with kingfish, some nice ones are coming in upto 17kg. Even though the water has not looked flash, there has been plenty around, take your time and try to catch a ky as a live bait, they are working the best. Slidebait the shallow shelfs over high and the deeper water over low. Mid mornings been the pick of the times before the strong winds get up.
Snapper, during the decent swells there have been some fantastic fish come in, several over 20lb and a good number of 5-7kg fish. Most of which have come from one particular area, but its not mine to tell. However I can say that the southern end of Whakaki has been fishing well for sholies. There has also been huge schools of trevs, not all big fish, but some good ones in with them. Move around and dont just sit there waiting, it seems that if your on the spot its consistent, and when your not................. it doesn't get any better.
Blacks has been ok. The odd sholie at the car park being caught consistantly around 9-10pm, but not many. Towards nuhaka has had better fishing with a few ky, the odd gurnard and a few pannies, although they have been quite small, 27cm to 32s at best.
Wairoa bar, lots of kahawai and on some days, a shit load of kings, and some monsters at that. Just a matter of the righ conditions.
Dinahs, fished it once with james, it was the first time in many years I can say I didn't get a bite. During the prime time it was dead as!
Hope that gives you a good idea about mahia. Remember, for the kings to cast plenty of lures, take the hooks off if you dont want to loose the lure, it will increase the chance of a hit to your livebait.

The paua are not small due to climate Tony, they are small due to people raping the sea. If permits were not issued for paua as little as 80mm, we would not have the issues we currently have, I could write a small novel on how frustrating some of that rubbish is.
Crayfish are a dying breed due to some of the greed that is happening, let hope things come to a holt sooner than later or tangaroa gets the better of them!Wairoa Hawkesbay

If it wasn't such a drag uploading photos, id whack a few up. It has been full on, more so on the water, but certainly shore based as well.
Seas primo at the moment, ill be out tonight throwing some lures around. Wairoa Hawkesbay
