Heading over to Kawhia tomorrow morning for a surfcast (same spot I caught the eagle ray a few months back) taking both of my fin-nor surf rods tomorrow one of them is going to be focused on catching lemonfish the other for what ever hits the mullet strips I will be using for bait. Was thinking of using a running rig with 5oz B.O.S and 6/0 circle hooks bait is going to be whole vannamei prawns as they were cheaper than buying crabs ($1.75 for eight large prawns)
I just use a pulley rig with prawns bait. These days I don't even bother with the bling, lemons couldn't give a shit about bling Lemons will often pick it up and come towards the beach, so you get no visible bites, just slack line.
Sometimes very visible and loud bites race. Like a lot of fish i guess depending on what there feeding on and how aggressively as to how they hit the baits. Any "Rig" will do, but like chris i just stick with my pulley rigs. Hook size 3/0 to 6/0 ideally but you will catch on smaller and larger hooks all dependent on how mean or generous you are with your bait sizes. I use 4/0 gamy circles for a nice glob of craytail bait, or half a dismembered shelled paddle crab. The lemons are pretty thick round here at the moment, and will continue to be right thru til winter time.
