Its that time of year again for me where I'm sorting through my tackle and making lists of equipment to purchase for this year's winter's surfcasting. So far I've looking around on google earth for any good locations, the problem is that most of the Wairarapa coasts are littered with farms and their runoff or people that are overfishing the place.
So far the places of promise appear to be Flat Point, Rerewhakaaitu river mouth (I'm not sure if this location is accessible), Te Awaiti, White Rock, Whareama Beach (I'm not sure how to access this place). Has anyone fished any of these places? I also heard that you need a key to access parts of Flat Point and White Rock, does anyone know anything about that?
My main target fish for this winter is anything other than red cod, eel or crabs.
Maybe Mr GaryK knows of a place or two - love your book by the way (casting about in the surf).
Flat point is fairly accessible there is a relatively long shingle beach that runs along alot of the coast. If you turn right at the river mouth you can get right down (4x4 would be handy though). If you go all the way to the end you can park up at a little parking spot in the subdivision and there is a walkway which will take you all the way down to the beach.
White rock you have a few options, once you get along the coast there will be three gates next to each other you can take the middle one and drive down a track until you get to a little parking area here you can walk down to the river, there is a long shingle beach that runs along the coast. Alternatively you can just keep driving south and there are accessible spots all along until you get to the padlocked gate.
Whareama Beach- Unless you plan on hiking over from Castlepoint im pretty sure the main access point would be from the river. Between Whareama and Castlepoint there are some nice beaches that are more easily accessed like Otahome so that could be an option for you!
Te Waiti/Tora also has a few beaches you could fish. Once you get down to the water front the road will spike left and right if you head right towards Tora there are several shingly bays which can offer great fishing!
Thanks for your comments. The only place I can add for you is Matakona rivermouth. I only fished there once and caught a couple of moki. (Must be a ferw there) I caught them without burley and using Gulp! crabs for bait on a ledger rig.Hope this helps. There is a lot of awesome coastline along there and it appears that no one fishes it. It would be a great challenge to seach out the hot spots. The snapper don't know where the car park is! Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.
