Veritas

Hi,
I have just purchased a Veritas surf caster and the rod joint, particularly the top two sections, are very hard to get together. a real strain to get them to join, extremely tight fitting. Is this normal??
any advice appreciated.

You have come to the right place, Veritas rods have had a lot of mentions on this site. I have two of them and the problems I have experienced are different to the issues you have.

I'm sure you will get some helpful advice.

Hi Peter, the first ones were to lose then they made them to tight , it's easily fixed take it back to the store you bought it from they should have as I always do put them together before you sell them . The other fix is to very carefully sand the joints down . I use a scotch brite type sanding pad , you can get them from your local auto motive paint shop.

I just snapped mine recently because of this fault.

So i would get on to it sooner than later if i were you.

hmmm, maybe i should take it in if there has been faults with this.......(goes and dismantles fishing rod garden shade house)

Just get some fine grit sand paper and rub the inserts down a bit until it feels like it will go with a good push and rub a minute amount of grease on it. it will slide in and most importantly, out like butter.
I had the same problem with mine but it's great now. No other problems so far and I feel its an excellent rod in its price range.

Hi Peter, good news is you've bought a great rod. Got one 6 months ago and heard of breakages caused by tight joins. Give it a rub with fine emery, 400 grit, silicone spray, job's right. Treat it like a woman, too loose is worse than too tight. Wish I had 2 now. Rods that is.

The point is the rod should never have left the shop if it did not fit together correctly, it would not happen at Tackle Tactics and if it was a genuine manufacturing fault I would replace it and I would deal with the supplier . Do you still have the undamaged sections.

All problems with the earlier rods have been addressed. If yours is faulty you should return it to the supplier. If he cant fix it (as Phill has pointed out) we will replace it.

Hangler what is the problem with your Veritas Rods? WE have sold hundreds and the join configuration problems with the first run is the only problem we have had reported to us.

I still have the whole rod, will take it in today and see what happens.
I'm guessing a two year old rod is an early model.

The problem I have experienced with these rods has been discussed on here before. On early models the eyes were prone to bending at the slightest knock. I understand this issue has now been fixed with a better quality eye.

The second item is a manufacturing over-site, with a rod in this price range it should be supplied with a canvas rod bag. Phill agreed with this critique and mentioned he was going to try and get some canvas rod bags to suite.

Not having a rod case means the rod is highly prone to damage in transport. Not all anglers wish to carry their rods assembled on the vehicle's roof. The idea behind a three piece rod is so it can fit easily into a family car, with no rod case for protection this is an accident waiting to happen.

As mentioned, both these issues have been widely discussed on here before.

I cant say I totally agree with that. If I want a rod bag or tube for my rod(s) and it doesn't come with one, I would then buy one and problem would be solved.

You don't get free glassware with every box of beers...Just sayin'....

Hangler, you should have had a good look at the rods and componentry before purchasing. If your not happy either buy something else or change the guides. Pretty simple really and no reason to complain.

So after reading through the post you directed us to, all I get from it is that two people don't like the quality of the guides (on some of the rods) and two people snapped theirs. I still don't see any fault in no rod bags. And have heard far more positive feedback on the rods and people seem to be happy with the price as they continue to sell and are still getting good reviews.
Your issues with the rod are easily fixed. Buy a rod bag(s) and sand the inserts a bit until they fit nice. Good to go fishing.

Awesome rods ( I have recently purchased 2) Hangler tends to whinge about everything anyways and I'm guessing he would want a life time warranty. It's simple....if you want a rod bag then buy one !

Yeah i always thought it was an awesome rod, just seemed to have faults in the early models which have now been sorted out by the sounds.

Jed, I class myself as one of the really fortunate ones. I bought two of the early models and the rings are crap. Of course I could buy some new rings, but as the manufacturer was concerned enough to change the type of rings, I feel my concerns were justified.

Now as for the rod bags: look at the post made by Phill on the thread I posted.

I currently have 3 of them, good rods for the price. Now seeing as they are a mid range priced rod, if you want a bag go and buy one...
If you break a guide, go and get it replaced, cost all of $10. I have smashed about 3 guides on them so far but haven't whinged or complained, it's part of having a rod, I've also broke guides on my more expensive rods with better quality guides. Once again it's no biggie.

However my veritas rods are now gathering dust in the shed as I no longer use them, but they are good rods for the price

I have taken the rod into hunting and fishing and mentioned Phill and Garys comments on this thread about the faulty tight joins on the early models (which was clearly the case with mine).

They have sent the rod back to the disturber who will decide whether i will be able to get a replacement or not.

I was in my local fishing shop earlier this week,(drinking coffee ETC)talking, when the Auckland rep came in to pick up a broken Veritas surf rod we had been talking about .The break was in the second(mid)section where it fits into the first(butt)section.The rep is aware of the joint problems. I had helped the manager sand and polish 4 new rods 2 weeks earlier so they would fit together properly before putting them in the rack for sale.In defence of the product, My Veritas rods get used a lot and looking up the beach all my mates use them as well.For the money they out perform most rods worth twice even three times the price.Keep in mind that they are NOT a custom rod.
