Just an update: Fished matata Tues night for 5 xos kahawai but no snapper, whereas my mate got 3 snapper up to 45 cm on sat night same place. Went further down the coast past Opotiki on Wed Night landed 3 Snapper up to 55cm during the evening plus got absolutely wasted by a massive bitey- Thurs morn saw the snapper of my dreams reach the edge of the beach thrust a massive tail skywards in a piscatorial one fingered salute then dropped the hook and swam away... Oh also shot 2 possums and a wild cat with the .22.. all in all a bloody good trip, roll on next days off!!

Sounds like a good couple of trips. Bad luck with that big one , but at least you saw it. Well done.
