Any word from the northern sector? Cant be far off from showing Snapper. Was all keen to head up but stories of plauge spiny dogs and cold water made me think otherwise.
Snapper are coming in off the beaches via the longlines, but for the amount of longlines going out, it seems to be very patchy. All of the snapper have been of verious sizes too, from 2kg to 8kg mainly.
Surfcasting is mixed. Blacks right through to Mohaka has been full of rubbish like spiney dogfish, but they are thinning out allot and in some places, have now gone, although all it takes is one southerly to push em back in.
There has been some exceptional snapper caught in the boats right in close (2km offshore mainly) off the Nuhaka mouth and Wairoa areas, so they are not far.
For me Mahanga last year from Christmas to June was pretty awesome fishing, getting my limit twice over Christmas and a couple of other times later in the year around May. Im hoping that we get a good run earlier this coming season, so over the next couple of weeks I will invest a bit of time into this spot. There has been allot of kahawai on the rods here so far, the odd gurnard and small kahawai late in the evenings. Fairly typical, but we live in hope
Been allot of trawling pressure off of blacks, tahanui, whakai, back oF wairoa areas, so hope these f$%^wits leave a few for the beach fisherman to catch when the time is right.
it would be certainly worth a crack at the big snapper after the next bit of bad weather. The big snapper run has hit Te Awanga, Bay View and Mohaka. but hasn't quite made it thus far yet.
Cheers Chad. Yeah patchy is the general description. Like you mentioned kontikis are picking a few, mohaka spat a few out yesterday afternoon. Still thinking invested time locally this week and labor weekend could have a higher chance of producing a gud snap rather than northern beaches wish shifty south changes forecast . Tomorrow evening then saturday my picks. Then crack that wip next week!. The lack of crabs is concerning locally, i didn't think id ever say that. On various outings i haven't floated baits, with half hour bait checks standard. Mohaka was an hour bait changes!!. Looking forward to Mahanga, such a special place.
