Why do some people do a lot of surfcasting?

Am trying to formulate some answers to this question. eg. Have enhanced hunter/gatherer instincts. Like to challenge themselves. Are competitive. Appreciate the ever-changing shoreline. Simply enjoy it.

Ron, you have probably asked the best question ever to be raised on this site; which means you will get the most unrewarding answers.

Whilst most people will phrase their answer with the challenge and he result, my answer would be, and this with over sixty years experience, simple enjoyment.

Whether it be a specimen or simply a fish such as the humble Kahawai, if it fits in the frying pan, the expedition has been a complete success.

I would suggest there is more bullshit written about surfcasting than any other other sport. Sure we occasionally latch on to a specimen but most times we don't. The complete joy of surfcasting is solely participation. Should we rely purely on results, most anglers would have given the game away within weeks of starting.

You don't believe me? Count the anglers who hit the beach with a packet of squid for bait and a hot pie from the local dairy, plus a six pack. They don't expect to catch fish, they hope, and frequently they live up to expectations, time after time after time. Does an empty bag discourage them from going again? ... Not on your life.

That's called fishing ... and on a personal note, long may it remain so.

Not necessarily mine but a few more
Love, passion, desire and the anticipation of the next bite.
Cost, some may argue but surfcasting is a cheep sport
It keeps the brain ingauged due to the challange and trying to find the fish, evaluating the beach looking for holes and things of interest getting lost in fishing calendars.
Its many different forms and techniques.
Learning just the other night I learnt 2 new tricks.
The seanery is amazing, the things you see the people you meet.
To get out of the house and find some u time with who you want.
If you have caught a big fish the adrenaline rush and the desire for it again.
Last but not least the enjoyment of catching, its not always about catching a set target sometimes just catching something sooths the sole.

Agree with Hangler but would add in,the enjoyment of anticipation and planning, it has never lessened over many years.

To put it simply, it's something that I enjoy, so why not spend time doing something I enjoy.

Its a useful past time where the only person you compete against is yourself. Also to catch something to eat (hopefully)

I just want to get the work over as soon as possible so I can do some fishing. Fishing relaxes me. It's like yoga except I still get to kill something.
