it`s me

Hi all as you can tell by my user name (fishwanter) I find it very hard to catch fish of any type of the beach, I tell lies can do KY`S.
when over to Coromandel over Queens B/Day, was told that Windy Point just north of Fantail Bay, is a can`t miss spot, Guess what, I did

.
I toss baits around the Taranaki coast. Love being out there but would be nice to catch a fish.
feel a bit daft asking for any tips as I think I have tried them all. Perhaps my problem is that I should face the Sea when casting, havn`t tried that yet.

Patience is somewhere in my tackle bag but I try not to dig that deep.Try many baits, rigs, cast distance, hooks, time of day, location etc. The different variations are endless and you will never have enough fishing gear but persistence will bring great rewards. Good luck buddy, oh yeh, rule 1 and 1A, sharp hooks, good bait.

No how you feel in away,I've tried catching rig off the beach for years,tried everything to catch one but still haven't caught one yet.but at the end of the day I still enjoy it.

If you want to catch a fish then do this

Set up your rods
Walk 20 - 30 metres away from your rod and have a pee or get a drink

Fish on.

Thanks for the advise, May head up to Mokau this weekend and try it out. Will advise if I make any progress.

Cant believe you are still haunted by that elusive snmooth hound. Bite the bullet and buy a crayfish and go to Porangahau and fish the rivermouth with small cray baits. You will get him. Dont worry about surf size, they will be there waiting for you.

Alright Bud, tell us a bit more info.
Where are you fishing? and times your fishing
where are you based I'm out the back of bell block.
What rigs and hook size are you using?
Rod and reel and line size?

There is quite a bit of info on here for fishing around Taranaki, and once you sus this coast out u will quickly learn we have one of the best land based fishing areas in NZ.
I haven't been on here much lately but have a half written post I need to finish off.

Hi Naki I to live in BBK, with a one piece 15 ft with a Mitchel reel c/w 9 kg nylon. I fish with Pen rig, ledger and running sinker. Bait Squid or Pilchard. Brother inlaw as farm on the coast at Rahotu (rock city) usually fish PM not nights. don't do ledges have fished Tongaprutu.

keep what ever you use simple.
Rock city is a beautiful place to start lol. seriously the places Ive been fishing lately most would say your dreaming casting into that and honestly my first thoughts were exactly that no way can you fish that.
The Taranaki coast takes time to sus out and some years are just out right sht for ya.
Best advice I can give you is 1) if you can spare the $45.00 join the New Plymouth Surfcasting club couple of outings with these guys will have you ready for Summer (they all love Mitchel's there to) if you are really dedicated and willing to travel Opunake club is awesome to. Both clubs are in a bit of a rebuild stage and you'll never go wrong joining a couple.
2) start a dairy or calender it takes time but well worth it.

My Go to rig is: 20 - 30lb main line through a 4oz sand spike sinkler swivel and a 400 - 600mm long 60 - 80lb trace 6/0 - 10/0 hook with a pilly tied onto it.

You'd be suprised what I have pulled and seen pulled of BB beach. from the Links to the Airport fishes bloody well just need to spend the time
and capture what happened etc in ya diary.

Logan thanks for your comments. Pen rig Pendulum rig, used only over sand, running sinker over the rocks. Have not been down the Links or the walk way, but will give that area a try. Will keep all informed of my progress.

Hi, when you talk about a running ri is it the 400 mm hook trace which runs down the main line to bead and swivel above the 600mm sinker trace, or the other way round with the main line and hook trace joined together?

Hi place the sinker on the main line, swivel, 70 lb nylon about 700 mm to hook or hooks.

Way I run mine main line through sinker (sliding) swivel then trace between 150mm - 400mm and a single 6/0 or 8/0 or 10/0 normally snodded on when your casting straight into reef it works well and for that matter it has also improved my fishing over the sand.
