Hi guys and girls, just filling in time and haven't seen anything on the post for a day or two. [Tackle Tactics] is my NZ Herald. At this time of the year, dawn and dusk closer together set me wondering. Ok we all know? change of light is the best? time to fish. Is this because the fish are not frightened of sun on the water, or because they're hungry? I'm afraid, contrary to most of you I expect, I fish when I can, wife otherwise happily occupied, so I have to take the conditions as I find them. For me, being on the beach is the thing. Sorry for the ramblings, any waffeling in reply would be interesting.

I find that fish can come on the bite any time of the day or night small changes in conditions for example a bit of cloud cover or change of wind. I'm the same as you any time spent on the beach is a good time fish or no fish

Contrary to the experiences of many others, I've never caught anything worthwhile at night. I've fished good places like Mohaka and Whakaki until 3am and caught nothing but sharks and stingrays.
Late afternoon 4-7pm or just after sunrise have been the most productive times for me regardless of location or tide position.

After mid-day till about dark is the go for me.Being retired I've had my early morning fishing and climbing over rocks.I find a good sandy beach is the go for me.Still catch the same amount of fish that I use too which is bugger all so nothing has really changed.Still enjoy getting the sand between my toes though.

Really appreciate these replies, nice to know there are others not in the top 10% who still enjoy just being there, I fish when it suits me, not the fish.

Total opposite up here in the BoP.
Night time's the right time round theseaways. Change of light most definitely the very best time for me.
I've caught fish up to 10pm then it's like someone turned the switch off until 2-3am when they come back on and then vanish again about 4.
Daytime fishing from the shore here yields mostly kahawai, trevally and the odd stupid snapper.

Fishing Papamoa I find as soon as the sun goes down the best time. I like my bed to much to try the early morning

I'd agree. That applies for most of our BoP coast.
I don't bother with the dawn missions any more.
Too much hype in the fishing books about the best times. Experience is the best guide.

I agree with you Geno. The biggest snapper I've caught were between 3pm and 6pm not dusk. The most gurnard Ive caught round Napier were at about 11am two hours after high tide. Makes you wonder about the theory of bites times rather than fishing times.

Genos right! (you dont hear that often)BOP snapper feed at night no matter how hard you try to disprove it. I fished matata one time fot 24 hours. I caught 14 snapper! These were caught between 1 am and 4am the only other catch was a kahawai at the change of light in the evening.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

Funny what you can catch in the middle of winter. When I posted "night and day" this was exactly the sort of response I hoped for. I'm afraid that at my age, and home circumstances, the best time to catch fish in the BOP is not the best time for me to be on the beach. But I still love it, I'm glad we have this fishing chat room, and I 'm still a part of the fraternity.

Hi Rob here from Wairarapa, Organic Dairy farmer. love the site thanks.
I fish whenever I can on the coasts down here, love White Rock moki and Gurnard and past Ocean Beach(south wairarapa) at the Muka Muka area , moki and blue cod. Kahawai at all areas. I just love fishing and have been going for about 6 years now every opportunity I get. I agree that just being at the sea and feeling the rhythms is a big part of what it's about but catching fish is a big plus!!! anyhow just an intro and will try and join in when I can. Dairy farming does restrict my movements a bit but we are now Once a day milking which is much better thanks regards Rob

Hi Rob B

I fish a lot up and down the Wairarapa east coast (and the south coast too). I did fish around in the Muka Muka area too although I never really got on to moki there - just the odd one. I went there mainly for lemons (spotty sharks) but the numbers around the Wairarapa coast has dropped markedly over the last 6 years.
I haven't fished the Muka Muka area for about 6 years. To be honest I found the track over there had got a bit too "hairy" for me in the 4WD. I was OK with the shingle/sand slide, the 20 degree "lean" was OK and of course coming back at night over the same spot you couldn't see the 250 foot drop to the beach directly below over your right shoulder anyway. What really got me was the last time I went over it was daylight. I got out to close a gate I had just gone through and saw that the track I had just rolled over had been undercut by heavy rain - with a bloody big drop down below. I spent the next 4 hours wondering, while I fished, whether it would give way under my wagon when I went back.
What is the track like now days? Have you, or anyone else, been over it on a regular basis recently in a 4WD?

Hi RW yes the track is hairy , I havnt been for a month but they did put a dozer over it last summer and we could get through OK , I have a RAV4 and have no problem. The track changes every time it rains as you experienced. I have a mate who goes hunting in there reg and I always give him a call and ask before I go but the shingle bit is the dodgy bit and you can get close then go have a look.
