Not asking for the venue but was this caught in Hawke's Bay? Nice gurnard, two lovely fillets on that one.

Yes, local in HB. The fillets were really thick, fish for dinner tonight!

I have just heard there was a very large snapper caught south of Napier about three weeks ago. I will not give away the angler's hot sport but I am told he took a very large snapper in the same spot one year ago, missing the exact date by only one day.

Yes there was (7.5kg) now is the time of year to put in the hours hunting for them.

Hangler, The snapper caught on Monday was by Mark Roberts and taken at Te Awanga after the big seas. Mark put photos on Facebook and told anyone listening where he caught it. The other snapper you refer to was caught at a different spot a year earlier by another Pania Surfcaster who would probably tell you where if you asked him.
We have an eight week window for big snapper, just hope the longliners dont get them all.

The snapper don't know where the car park is!
Sometimes it is better to travel than to arrive.

There have been quite a few caught in that general area over the years, its common knowledge. The mussel beds would be one reason they come in there at a guess.
Some of the biggest have been caught close to the river mouths though, and there no shellfish beds there.
I think these big solitary fish tend to roam up and down the beach eating crabs and whatever else they can find, and if you happen to have a bait in the water as they come past you're this years lucky angler

The conditions were brilliant for gurnard yesterday and today. Crabs were out in force too giving them something to eat. Shame a few more didn't appear but its good see one.
