Low memory trace nylon

I have seen traces made with a Black nylon which appear to be very low memory. Can anyone tell me who stocks this type of line?

The most well known line with very low memory is called 'Amnesia' ... hence the name. This is imported from the UK and is used by virtually all match anglers.

I have used this line for about a year and I can't fault it. I think it would be unethical to put the name of the retailer on this site, totally unfair on Phill.

The line to which you refer is most likely an Ultima line called Enigma Super Snood. It comes in black, which they call "silt" and "sand" which is a sort of green colour. I have a number of spools of it in different breaking strains which I got from the UK where it is freely available. Whether the Ultima rep in NZ has it yet I do not know.

What I do know is that it is amazing stuff. You just have to play with a bit of it to see that it is nothing like a normal nylon. (I saw somewhere on the internet that it has magnesium oxide in it). When I rig up the tail half of a pilchard bait I use 2 hooks. The keeper hook is attached with a combination of a half hitch round the tail and 3 wraps of the line round the shank of the hook. Its complicated to describe but anyway a regular nylon trace ends up horribly kinked to the point where it has to be discarded after use a couple of times. No problem now with Ultima Enigma.

I generally use 30 and 40lb bs and it knots up really tight. I also got a spool of about 70 lb bs with the idea of using it for making pulley rigs and using for leaders - mistake. The thicker line does not pull up into tight knots.

About 10 years ago I tried some stuff called Sunset Amnesia 40lb - I am looking at the spool right now. I tried it for leaders and backbones for pulley rigs. I found it had plenty of "memory" when it was pulled off the spool and after a little bit of use the nylon went white and curly like a pigs tail. If it was still available I would avoid it.

I think it fair to say the Sunset Amnesia is not the Amnesia that is used today. This line is top of the tree and is often used in conjunction with Drennan Greased Weasel.

Amnesia has no memory and should you get a kink, just run the line between your fingers and it is arrow straight once more. In the time I have been using this for my traces it has never let me down and with my target specie being large rays, as you can imagine the traces get a really hard time. I should also point out the area where I fish contains a lot of foul ground.

This clip from YouTube shows a multiple hook rig invented for simplicity and to gain a few extra metres when the wind is somewhat against you.

The backbone is Greased Weasel, the snoods are Amnesia. All of the accessories, springs and clips, are available from Phill. This is the rig I intend to use to try out the mussel baits I demonstrated in my last video. I might add the fish oil burley is also packaged and sold by Phill.

ABU Man, that looks to be a very interesting line, I would certainly be happy to give it a go. I did notice the advert was made in 2012, and three years is a long time in a product's life span. It occurs to me now its specifications may be even better.

Hi ABU man,

Yes that page reads well but a word of caution....Im not sure its abrasion resistance is better than most other lines. Spiny dogs can snip thru 30lb bs without bother (mind you 30lb is pretty light).

And that internet page also burbles on about knots bedding down and pulling up tight...blah blah blah! As I said in my first post the 30 and 40lb bs is good and makes a nice compact knot but the higher bs stuff is not. I use a locked half blood knot and with 70lb bs Enigma snood line the end of the tag line would not "lock down" and when I tried to snip the tag end off to make a compact neat knot it worked loose and the knot failed. I should use "uni" knots more and I think in retrospect a uni knot might have done the business. However when I discovered this flaw in the heavy line I got the hump and biffed it in the bin. If I still had it I would give that knot a try now!

Taking into account my two provisos above I would say give it a try if you can get hold of the line and the 50 meter spools were not expensive. (The feel and look of the stuff really reminds me of trout fly casting line)
