Competition time

Wairoa Club last weekend and the big Kahawai Contest in Napier this weekeend. Looking for the heaviest kahawai on the Marine Parade down to Awatoto (Flagged area). Pania clubmembers (identified by a flag) should be placed every 200 meteres. They will be waiting for you to bring your fish up for tagging.

Well lets see if we cam mathematically predict the catch rate

Pania SC has just completed its 10 round twilight series in which those members in attendance fished 3 hours at a time for 10 wednesday evenings.
Twenty six Kahawai were caught over the ten evenings, and that works out to about 300 fishing-hours for 26 fish, or about 11.5 fishing-hours per fish.

Now, if 450 people fish the kahawai comp for 6.5 hours that will give a total of 2925 fishing-hours.
At a catch rate of 11.5 fishing-hours per fish we should have 254 kahawai weighed.............

No no. Catch rate is 1 fish per 11.5 hrs. Bob is only one man. The comp is not 11.5 hrs long. Bob is going home empty. Sorry Bob.

Well its done and dusted. 350 tickets were sold, 19 kahawai were weighed with the winning fish being 2.24kg. Well done to Brendon Teira making off with the $2000 worth of booty.
His was the only fish in the 2kg bracket, one fish was in the 1kg and all the rest were under 1kg.
A great day, lots of sun, and armfuls of prizes handed out.

Interesting figures from the Kahawai Competition.

2015 total fish landed: 15.
Total weight: 8.554kgs.
Average weight of fish. O.570kgs.

2016 total fish landed: 19.
Total weight: 13.585kgs.
Average weight per fish: ) O.715

Total number of fish landed up by 4.
Total weight up by 5.031kgs.
Average weight of fish up by:0.145kgs.

An increase in total fish landed ... an increase in total fish weight ... an increase in the average size of fish landed.

Seems like a successful competition all round.

Over 100 fish were weighed in 2014.
I don't know if we will ever see those days again.

There were 100 less tickets sold this year compared to last year.
I personally believe many of those who did not enter this year were discouraged by the lack of fish in 2015.

Have to say that after fishing the BOP it was disappointing to see the number of fish weighed in plus the size of many that were weighed in. Just one point from talking to a number of fishermen around me on the day - Why dont we start fishing at 7am. Most are set up on the beach by then and the sun is not so high, Seems that we are missing out on an our of the best fishing times.

Thats been mentioned before. Dont remember why not.
I checked the beach at 5m and more than half was staked out. Particularly the southern end.

Success for the club who put a huge effort in to get this comp up and running for the people of Hawke's Bay every year. Yes.

Success for the anglers. I guess so. Congratulations to the prize winners. Easy money if you only have to put a tiddler on the scales. Great prizes too.

Hard luck to the young fellow who I yelled out to as his rod bent over twice with a nice kahawai looking bend. He was ten metres away, yakking to his mate. By the time he got there, the fish was gone. Hard lesson learned there I think.

Spectacular fishing. No, in fact very poor.
Approx one fish weighed per 20 fishermen. Median weight of kahawai about 600 grams ie about 30 to 35cm in length. Only one person caught a fish over 2kg. Only two people weighed a fish over a kilo. Sea was ok, weather good, but decent sized kahawai were very sparse.

From my perspective as a quad rider, who spoke to pretty much every fisho on the bottom half of the boundary. Most fish caught were small, although it was nice to hear of a few stray albeit under size snapper, trevs being caught and returned. Not one gurnard as far as I am aware. Yet another snapshot of the state of the HB fishery? You be the judge.....
