Breakaway - Impact Shields or Imp Clips

Good afternoon all,
I have been using Breakaway Impact Shields on my pulley rigs for some time but as I am about to order more, I am wondering if I should change to Imp Clips. Does one have any advantage over the other?

I like the imps for the simpler rigging other then that no real difference imho

I have been using'Gemini Splash Down Solo' clips, usually available from this site but at present temporarily out of stock. I can say I have never once had a splash down clip fail to release, they do exactly as advertised.

They are limited in hook size, it is said they will only take up to a 4/0 hook. I use hooks I import from the UK, very sharp but made of very high quality steel, this means they are made thinner and stronger.

In theory the shields and the imps should work well, however both can suffer from a premature ejection, and no serious angler wants that to happen.

I had been using impact shields for my pulley rigs and have recently changed over to imp clips have used up to 7/0 circle hooks on them and I like them more than impact shields.

Less premature rejection from Imp Clips - the hook is held a little more securely. However, if you are using elastic thread on your bait make sure it is "tidy" with no loose ends or loops hanging down to catch on the clip which can prevent the bait being released on splash down.
Imp clips are hard to put together being tough on soft fingers but well worth the effort.
I have also used the Gemini Slash down clips with thin hooks like Varivas "big mouth" but they really are too small for most of the hooks that I use.

As a user of overhead reels and imp clips I find non-release is an issue at times. If there is any pressure on the line (such as too much spool brake, or severe cross-wind) when the rig hits the water, the line pressure is enough to overcome the water pressure on the clip paddle. Twenty minutes later you wind in to find the bait gone but the rig still clipped.
The other problem with imps is load. A large or heavy bait, such as half a large pilchard will not stay clipped and will unclip in flight.
Even so, they are still my choice of bait clip. Ease of use overcomes those occasional problems in my book

I make my own clips for the sinker end of the rig as I have a surplus of 1.6mm wire.
Over time I have found the following to be helpful

Off set the eye to approx. a 45 degree angle away from the side that the sinker is inserted.

Use a 7 - 9 turn uni knot and cover it with a short piece of latex tube after it has been tied. The Uni knot has to be snugged carefully due to the extra turns and doesn't offer any extra strength (In fact it might actually reduce it if not snugged carefully) but it does allow the line to stand off the clip eye better.

If using a pulley rig, I also use the extra turned uni knot for the swivel at the non sinker end. Again, to allow the line to stand off from the main part of the rig and again with a short piece of latex tubing.

I have played with using a lumo bead at the sinker end but it is sort of fiddly.

When tying the rig the soft bead has a short length of wire poked through it to widen the hole.
After this is removed, I pass the line through the bead, then through the eye of the clip then back through the bead and then secure with a uni knot between 3 and 9 turns.

Gently snug this down until the bead begins to distort. This helps the line stand off from the sinker even more than the previous method. I use this more for up and down rigs than pulley rigs.

Thanks jaypeegee, I will have an experiment with that. I haven't ever had problems with the Breakaway Shield but wondered if others thought that maybe the Imp Clips are better. I always use pulley rigs and found everything works fine. Perhaps I should apply the adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it".

There are other release mechanisms for fishing with pulley rigs but I have been sworn to secrecy by Tackle Tactics. If you see me fishing come and have a look at the best set up I have ever seen.

Not really what the post was about but does anyone have any thoughts on the ratio between imp/shield trace length and hook trace length. obviously the hook trace will be shorter but how much shorter for optimum flight.

Sounds interesting Gary. I don't think there's much difference between the two. They both do the job. Been using imp clips lately but I've found the shields are ok too. Just a matter of preference I think

Breakaway have released an OTG Impact shield details on the Breakaway site.
Based on a design from a private angler.https://www.breakaway-tackle.co.uk/otg-impact-shields.
Personally I always use Gemini Splashdowns (pour your own) BOP Snapper are not that big you can get away with 2/0 to 4/0 hooks.
