What is the general opinion of throwing the gills 'n guts of fish back into the sea? Does it work like burley or is it likely to cause fish to go elsewhere? It will give you great vegies if you bury it in the garden.

Surely the garden gains? As for the sea it probably feeds the crabs and sealice, they are enough of a problem as it is.While would other beach users like to see the fish remains wash up and feed the gulls?

My reason for making this posting is that for years I have gilled 'n gutted my fish on the beach and have heaved the entrails out into the surf hoping it will act as a burley. However recently I was told that the entrails of some species will actually drive fish out of the area, something I find hard to accept and wondered what others think.

I doubt that. Fish are by their nature opportunist feeders if its there and edible, they eat, little if anything dead lasts long in the wild before it is consumed by others.

I have enjoyed good fishing in the Wairarapa, gutting and gilling as I fished only to have the fishing go dead and 15 min later have a series of tug of wars and bite offs with big fish. Kahawhai, gurnard, moki etc dont like 7 gills big congers and tope too much.
Ive had good fishing interrupted by the arrival of spiney dogs too often to be coincidence as well - particularly with gurnard in late afternoon.
I used to use berley on a couple of Wellington west coast beaches to really good effect for terakihi and found that there were two fish that put them right off - congar eels and couta. Using berley was so good though that if I had it I continued to use it. Mussel and cray berley was ok but that wasnt so great for attracting kahawhai.
