Does anyone have any knowledge of Opoutere, and the campground there. Looking at a trip in January.

The estuary mouth is a fishy-looking place - there'll be kahawai there. It's an area where there's bird protection, meaning restrictions on access and no dogs allowed. Stingray are there as well, of course - lots of cockles there. Meant to be kingfish there too, but I haven't seen one. Have heard killer whales enter the estuary (again, not something I've seen). In winter once I caught a very large piper fishing off the little wharf further up the estuary. Truly was a big piper, biggest I've seen.
