Well done Talking of resident stingrays reminds me of my honeymoon circa 1972? We were staying in a motorcamp close to a wharf in Northland, the location escapes my mind but I recall a harbour with quite a few yachts and boats moored near to the wharf. Anyway my wife was asleep in the tent and about 2AM I was fishing on the wharf under a light. There were heaps of English mackerel chasing smaller fish under the light, looking like torpedoes in the phosphorescence. The tide was high and the water close to my feet as I was sitting on the edge of the wharf, nek minit the old Kilwell solid glass surf rod nearly bent double and the Roddy reel was screaming in protest. As I attempted to slacken off the jerky bloody drag the line snapped and all was calm again. I had relaxed back into semi sleep and was thinking about packing up the gear and getting some sleep then bloody hell a MASSIVE stingray surfaced right under my dangling feet, I near shit myself and just about fell into the brine with fright. Funny thing the next morning one of the yacht owners, who lived aboard, asked me if I "had seen the wharf stingray" apparently locals used to feed her and she was always lurking there I'm figuring that I must have hooked/foulhooked her with the surf rod and she had come to have a look at the intruder who was offering spiked snacks!!! Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.
