Best way to clean grubby fishing gear??

Have inherited a few Penn rods plus an older Aussie Butterworth and a older Kilwell boat/game rod
The rods are in good nick but all are pretty grubby with a patina of old fish juices and unclean hand residue dried upon them.
The roller guides on the game rods have verdigris showing and need stripping and cleaning but the guides have no corrosion or pitting as such.
Guessing that soaking in warm water with laundry powder or bio-luvil and a soft scrubbing brush might be the best approach.
I want to clean these rods up so they don't insult my own collection of gear that I have accumulated over the last 55 years, used a lot, but still in excellent nick due to careful daily maintenance.
Anybody got ideas for a decent clean, without using solvents that might bugger the finish on these rods???
Men and fish are alike. They both get into trouble when they open their mouths.
