It was only a couple of months ago that I took my nieces for a day out on the train to Redcar, as my parents took me, and their parents took them.
Pretty much anyone living in the Teesside area will have had a day out there at some point or another.
I wrote at the time that:
'There isn't actually much to do since the funfair closed down, and the whole place has a faint whiff of sulphur/rotten eggs from the Tata steel works along the coast. And just the air of general decay that is apparently typical of seaside resorts around the U.K..
But people still go there nonetheless'.
And now that faint, familiar old whiff of sulphur/rotten eggs has gone, probably forever, and along with it 2000 jobs just before Christmas.
What an absolute kick in the balls for a long neglected region that's already on it's arse.
