Hi Shaun, the system can be turned off without any problem on any car up to approx mid 2001.On the later cars when you turn it off the red STOP sign stays on in the dash panel.The easiest way to program the valves is with the excitation tool, 2 min job for all valves.I use the ALFA tool as it was easier to obtain from ALFA than Renault.
I think the bulb is an led in the dash and if removed you will probably get another (STOP)light coming on as a back up.
