Hi Colin I have 5 Techs who use my premises from time to time as a perk of the job. I dont open on Saturdays and let them use the premises on Saturdays only. There are many pit falls to this and I have over the years put together a contract which becomes part of their terms of employment. If they want use of the premises they must sign thiscontract on a yearly basis. The contract includes removal of any private vehicles from the garage premises and surrounding roads, to them taking responsibility to declare their tax & Ni. Also hi fire risk jobs like welding are banned and i run a strict regime of checking that parts oil & anti freeze are not collected from what is a selfhelp parts dept ready for Saturday private work. I have no problem with them using consumables gloves paper towels sprays etc. etc. the contract is a couple of pages long and covers all sorts of things, most of my guys respect it but as an employer of a family member that is when your problems start I wont go too far into that one. You need to be aware that incomming phone calls for private work and their weekend customers calling in to see them not only wastes time and causes distractions on complicated jobs, you really need to be strict and aware of these sorts of pitfalls. I realise that the Trade doesnt pay top rates but I pay my lads good rates and they can earn a substantial ammount on Saturdays working on average 48hr week. You must allways give yourself in any contract the right to withdraw it if any of your rules are broken and if incorparated as part of their contract of employment the formal warning system bought into play. I dont know if any of this is helpful. John K.
