Many Japanese cars in the UK are built in Europe and as a result often have different engine management systems (local content rules, probably).
Example 1; Nissan Terrano II that a customer brought to me that had had a Japanese spec head fitted about 2 years previously. The UK spec was Bosch EDC (going from memory) but the Jap spec was Zexel. The injector threads in the head were a different size and the needle lift sensor signals were completely different between the two systems. Result, the engine light kept coming on. Even worse the Zexel injectors open at about twice the pressure causing premature injector pump wear.
Example 2; Toyota Yaris, again two different systems, my customer came to me after he had changed the engine but it would not run. The cam sensor signal is different, I got one sensor machined to fit the head and it then tried to run but was sparking for the wrong cylinder. The index mark on the end of the cam must have been different.
It just means that you have to check your system and the one that the replacement engine originally had before you buy.
Hope this saves someone from some heartache.
