Not sure if you have a definitive answer yet but I believe that original registration numbers can be recovered for older vehicles and even a vehicle that has not been previously registered in the UK can have an age related number issued if the age of the vehicle is confirmed by a relevant expert. I can speak from the experience of dealing with a 1927 steam roller which cluttered up my forecourt for a couple of years .
