You could try the Dartbridge Inn at Buckfastleigh http://www.dartbridgeinn.com/ It's about 200 yards off the main A38 and half an hour from Plymouth. I've never stayed there - it's only 15 minutes from home - but it's a nice setting and food has always been reasonable.
