We did a Job today where they ( Not sure whether it was AA or RAC ) Quoted a Customer £300 to fit a Starter motor and Alternator on a rough old 2000 V Reg peugeot 206, After Explaining that we would do our own checks first before replacing any parts, The Customer said OK as I didn't trust their Diagnosis or Quote, I told him that we would check the Starter motor, Battery, Charging system and Leakage and then inform him of the results. ( He said he knew he hadn't got any leakage as there was no oil on the floor )
Anyway it had a Faulty Starter motor due to a Faulty ignition switch not returning from the crank position, a Faulty battery that was Fully charged and wouldn't read 6V on a High Rate discharge tester and read out as 90 CCA on the Electronic crap tester. ( OK It was right this time )
So We Fitted a Starter motor and a Battery and a Starter button so that he couldn't leave it stuck in mesh again and the Bill was £160 + vat. And The Alternator was Working perfectly.
Tony.
