Was the problem in 2WD or 4WD or Both. If you didn't try it in 4WD its a shame - I would have liked to know the results.
I know of some instances where tyre are considered wear matched components. They may have been a b###h to start with but they wear into suit the vehicle set up.
Also, new tyres are not perfect - they need a run in period.
For both the above reasons I hesitate, take deep breaths, before putting different brands front and rear.
Give the customer 500kms and swap the tyres front to rear and see if you still get the same effect.
