Hi Peter. There is a lot of interesting information on that site.
Another question I have seen raised is the depletion of fossil fuel stocks. They will not last forever, or even very much longer.
According to who you believe, fossil fuel supplies have peaked and will be depleted within 20 years. A recent investigation of the motives behind the Irag conflict stated that the Iraqi oil reserves, though vast, would only supply the USA for 4 years at its present consumption levels.
Whereas, we can now consider bio-diesel for fuelling cars, the quantity and quality of fuels needed for aviation could pose a problem for aviation. (An advantage of bio-diesel is that there would be no further increase in atmospheric CO2 as a result of its use, and possibly few additional undesirable by-products.)
Are we going to see an end to cheap air travel ?
Is the current demand for a new major airport(or extension of existing airports) in the UK going to be short-lived as a consequence ?
The modern world has developed to the extent it has due to the availablity and exploitation of fossil fuels, mainly oil. Globalisation, and all its advantages and pitfalls, has come about as a direct result of this same factor.
I can only believe that future generations will wonder at the selfishness of our generations for squandering such a vast and valuable natural resource, particularly on personal transportation - the car !
(Which, incidentally, has made me a living for the last xx years !)
