Hi All I and several friends have recently recieved a new virus e-mail which looks very official and is allegedly from Microsoft titled among others as Internet critical upgrade. The official explaination is posted below. Please do not open this e-mail, a friend who did had serious problems and had to eventually reformat their PC and re-install everything. Microsoft updates are only available from the Microsoft update site as they do not have everybodies individual e-mail addresses. Virus alert: W32/Swen.A Worm The CERT Co-Ordination Center (CERT/CC) - the major reporting centre for Internet security problems - has received reports of a new mass-emailing worm virus, referred to as "W32/Swen.A" or "W32/Gibe.F". This worm has been reported to propagate through email, network shares, and file-sharing networks such as KaZaA and IRC.
What to look out for The W32/Swen.A worm arrives as an attachment. The email often claims to be a Microsoft Internet Explorer Update or a delivery failure notice from qmail, and while the From address varies, the subject often reads Returned Response. The message's body often contains the words Undeliverable mail to (email address) When the attachment is opened, the worm attempts to mail itself to all email addresses it finds on the system.
The worm may also attempt to terminate any security and antivirus products running on the system. Regards Shaun
