Old Chinese Proverb, 'FOR EVERY GAIN THERE IS A LOSS'(actually an old engineering adage but still as relevant today as it ever was). Gas, LPG Etc: Etc: Etc:,in most of its forms is CORROSIVE!.I have been rebuilding engines now for most of my adult life, (yes I know, what a sad b------). I used to do loads of engines from forklifts, (you know, the ones with the big round bottle strapped on the back). Most engines when stripped would be bright red or brown inside, especially in the combustion chamber area and in the exhaust ports. On some the EX valves and seats would be almost eaten away and often the same applied to the piston rings or even the pistons and in almost all cases the cylinder walls. Yes, thats it, top marks, first prize, you've guessed it, CORROSION ,the dreaded rust. All of this well before the advent of 'must get a gas conversion, so cheap to run, brilliant economy, so cheap to buy, i'll put the spare wheel in the passenger seat and i only need to drive 20 miles to my nearest GAS station, w o n d e r f u l . Now, you all say 'but Colin those old engines were cast iron, now we are dealing with modern materials, alloys, unleaded seats/valves Etc'. I agree, but, the gas is still corrosive and modern engines are running hotter and revving faster , so in effect are doing more work. So, inspite of the modern materials the gas just carries on doing its thing ( chomp-chomp). Never mind, Gordon Brown Has a plan to rectify this problem, S O O N.
