With Chris here, HC just Hydrogen & Carbon in gaseoud form in the case of a car engine. So the boffins were being pedantic, waht they probably thought was that they weren't pure elementary gasses, but then all the other gasses we measure are molecular not atoms, even the O2. As someone said, perhaps they need to get out more. As regards a previous post, some materials at normal pressure go through sublimation, i.e. change from solid to gas without going through a liquid state, the one that springs to mind is Carbon Dioxide, i.e. it goes straight from dry ice to gaseous CO2 without going liquid, the only way you can make it liquid it at extreme pressures. Others exist, but don't spring to mind immediately. Regards,
