Warning Worst move we made Insurance!!!! Archived Message

Hi all in a bid to save on our ever burgeoning insurance premiums, last year we asked our broker to check out the market place. He came up with Royal Sun Alliance who would keep our premium the same as Cornhill who were looking for another massive hike so we went with the recommendation.

A few weeks into the new policy RSA sent around an inspector who left us an 8 page report. We have always considered ourselves a law abiding garage who are up together with good sound premises. But not according to the RSA. So last September we embarked on the most expensive insurance exercise in our history. Replacing our 15 year old alarm system which foiled our one and only attempted break in, now with a Dual com system to comply with DDA243 Landline & mobile comms with dual pick ups etc etc. New key safes, Electrical certificates on wiring which necessitated a complete rewire not because of faults but to bring us up to new NjCEIC standards, every lead, electrical appliance over 100 items now has to be annually PAT's tested, Separate Bunding of our oil store so that even new drums and waste drums of oil filters, antifreeze etc are covered, new window locks, change of doors for more security, mobile phone safe so no mobile phone to be used in workshop (fire hazard the only recommendation I took pleasure in) Condemnation of our heating system which is only 2 years old the best money can buy, indirect fired & flued oil heaters . You name it the list was endless and has taken just over a year to implement and cost in excess of 12k this is on top of the exorbitant annual premium. So be warned if contemplating changing your insurance. I bet if we ever come to make a claim on our insurance they will find a way out of not paying up!!!!

To cap it all we have just had a visit from our local Health & safety Officer who could only pick fault with 3 minor problems one being training staff in lifting techniques requiring them watching a 1 hour video on the subject. Is there any other official waiting out there to put yet more red tape on us I'm glad I have only another 10 years to go.

    John Kennard.
