2 weeks ago on a Saturday morning we had a 1968 mini in for an engine tune.(Enthusiast) The customer supplied plugs points condenser cap and rotor. I gave the job to our youngest member of staff (22 year old) as an experiment and to watch for my own personal interest.
As I was busy and trying not to show too much interest in what he was doing (As I was observing)The inevitable happened.
I've never done points and condensers before....Well just give it a go and see how you get on! An hour later the car wouldn't start and we both had a bloody good laugh.
The dizzi was LIVE as he had left the plastic insulator off the points...And the 15 thou gap was...well not too bad to be honest. The timing could only be checked after I got it running and it was "Without Vac"
We then went onto the gases which he wasn't too bad on and the car was sorted.
We had another good laugh as the technology has changed so much it's scary. But on the other hand the stuff a lot of us were brought up with was alien to him....Like really Alien.
It was an interesting experiment and I think we both agreed that todays cars are more efficient and possibly easier to work on ???
I'm not sure if he learned anything but it was an enjoyable experiment...Old V new.....
