    Just think of it as a network of all the computers on the car, the same principle as an office network, with many messages being sent down two wires & much information being shared between the ECUs. Like vehicle speed for instance, this one signal will be read by mnay of the ECUs, such as EMS, ABS, SRS, Radio, SAT Nv etc, but then ignored by things like the comfort systems etc, each ECU will look out for signals it wants & process that information. Hence we can have wiper systems that turn on the headlamps etc. because they are all talking to eachother.

    By buzzing these messahes around just a few wires in the car, rather than having a wire for each 12v feed to each component around the car, we are seeing savings of up to 40% on the weight of wiring on a modern CAN equipped car, versus a similarly equipped car pre CAN.
