Hi. I have been discussing this situation earlier this week with another Member of UK Autotalk, We should not really let Customers take their vehicles away from the garage without paying first. (Especially new customers as they are usually new to you because they have tried everywhere else. Next time he will be some other unsuspecting garages new customer).
There are a lot of trustworthy customers that would always come back to pay, but there is a percentage of customers that are just out to get everything they can for as little as possible, even at the cost of ripping us off, (in fact some set out with that intention in the first place). The best customers are the ones that you have worked for time and time again, They trust you and you trust them. You do them a good job and they are happy to pay you for what you have done,
How can anyone blame you for a tappet breaking when the pump has exploded, It is just a scam to avoid paying for his tired vehicle repairing, If he had a grievance, Why didn't he mention it when he collected the vehicle, He might even "think" that he is right, that you caused the damage, but he can't really prove it if the vehicle stopped and was towed in to you.
