Hi Paul
I work on my own
We send out reminders a month before
I book MOT slots 1 or 2 weeks in advance. The slots are booked around 3:00 pm to allow for any repairs or servicing before hand
The customer has a choice, take it themselves or pay for a pre-check and my time taking for the test, this is all explained up front so they know the cost, i have had no complaints so far
I have a good working relationship with my MOT station, so if it does fail for some reason, they will do a free retest (at the moment)
I have talked to them about failures/retests, but they have not made their minds up yet (looking like NO free retests), they get their installation in a week or so. But we have sort of agreed that if it fails on something that i have overlooked, then i will leave the vehicle with them to fix, they will not then charge me for a re-test.....so every ones happy
So don't give up the MOT work, there is good money to be made, you just have to make your customers aware of the new computerised test and the cost involved
One thing that this new system will do (no disrespect to any members that do it) is kick into touch traders that put a vehicle in for a test without checking it over, they are making the MOT tester do your job for you. You then take it away and fix the faults and then return for a FREE retest (usually when the tester is busy ). From my experience these are the type of trade customers MOT stations will want to loose
