Diagnostics V Mechanical work Archived Message

    Hi all,

I would be interested in your views on this.

In my opinion, when the vast majority of retail customers have a car with a fault of any kind they tend to think their mechanic should be able to fix it regardless of if it is a mechanical or diagnostic problem. My point is that the majority of customers do not know the difference between the two types of work so it is understandable that they leave it with their regular garage. The trade should know better, do they I wonder? I believe that diagnostics should, and probably will at some time in the future, be recognised as a separate trade. Should it? Will it?

I am sure we would all agree that to do diagnostics to any decent level there is a need for a vast amount of knowledge, data and equipment. Bearing this in mind, should the average garage get involved in any diagnostic work at all? Are they doing themselves or their customers any service? Is there any other trade where tradesmen undertake work that they do not have the skills to complete? And without the intention to sub-contract it.

    What do you guys think.

    Regards

    Alan
