    Hi All,

"Perhaps specialising is the way forward."

I believe that, due to the short falls in aftermarket equipment, there will become a specialist in particular marques.

You can then focus on buying dealer equipment, support & parts just for that type of vehicle. There is then no reason you can't repair it as a whole. The customer doesn't care if you need to diagnose a rainwater leak by removing half the interior, or if you need to re-program the immobiliser to the keys when an extra key is needed. To them its fixing their car.

The days of saying that you will take money off them for a service, but sorry I can't do the abs, engine trouble, trans, climate control, locks, ESP, Reset the servie light etc etc, will soon be over. The customer will finally choose a garage that can look after their car, (if one is available!).

If you have more capacity than one make can give, buy two lots of dealer equipment & specialise in two makes.

I have found that by steering my business to one make I can return far greater profits per job on that make compared to other vehicles. Mainly due to being able to fix them quickly, due to familiarity of the vehicles, or known problems, & a good supply of OE spec parts in stock.
The biggest profit jobs are the ones no-one else can do, or want to do

The other thing I have noticed are that those that succeed in diagnostics are those that spend all their spare time reading up & learning about it. Getting to know the systems inside out.

    Regards
    Steve
