At around £700 to £800 a year to keep it up to date, not sure they will get many takers, especially the smaller Independents Government Licensing of Garages or Techs is the way to go......self regulation is a non starter. Only the bigger garages can afford all the red tape, so gives them an unfair advantage Ask any car owner if they have heard of a KITE mark approved garage or what it means......blank looks i expect Site tight Peter PS:The MOT computerisation was enough for some, lets not burden them more with a heavy duty (and costly) approval scheme

Here http://www.goodgaragescheme.co.uk/ is the web site. To tell you the truth it sounds good but like every scheme I got involved so far, I am very cautious on what I will get involved with in the future. Any opinions ??

Is it the case that you are looking at a "bigger picture" & trying to raise the game of the motor trade in general? If this is the case then, my opinion is that you are wasting time & money in trying to change the way the world works. Is this a British thing or what? Health & safety, Environmental regulations Trading standards etc... are all in place to deal with these concerns, although they do it inconsistently, often targeting genuine well intentioned outfits & missing the back street sharks. These governing bodies are regulation enough in my opinion. Even if we have a situation were mechanics are not allowed to practice because of no formal training, there will still be just as many unprofessional motor repairs carried out & possibly more so due to the increased costs imposed on the approved outfits. Britain is steadily pricing itself out of the world market with our attitude to over regulation & we all know how expensive things are already. Looking at other industries... Currently we are only allowed to carry out only minor electrical work in our own properties. Has this stopped any of you guys replacing light fittings & running a spur plug socket in the kitchen? Rules for rules sake I think! Cheers

Local people know who the good and bad garages are- you get what you pay for. We have a crap one who borrows tools picks brains, does MOTs to their own standard and leaves greasy hand marks on the steering wheels. And we have a good one who charges a bit more has a spot less workshop, an excellent tech and washes the car down.---Both attract the type of clientel they deserve. Last week I went out to a Builders Vito van-flat battery. Fair trade logo on the side-they were a right pair of comedians and both stoned.
