ive worked at a few independent garages since leaving school 14yrs ago and have been given a possible opportunity to go to a vw dealer,but as im not a certified vag mechanic i will have to go through all the training again.
has anybody in here been down this road and regretted it?

i work at an independent on all makes ,but like you say too many car's!! ive been on some bosch courses and have bought my own modis to learn with but now i feel i need a change!!
i remember on my common rail course dave tempest was saying that independents should ideally specialize in 1 makes because the tools to do this job cost so much money and as technology changes most car's end up at the dealer's because we cant do the job once we diagnosed it

A lot depends on the dealer. Some are excellent, some leave much to be desired.I would say try it, and if they do train you as promised, you will gain valuable product knowledge.
The way technology is moving even the best specialist independent is going to struggle to keep up.Not least because the tools,equipment & training are always going to be several steps behind.
The only way good independents score is on personal customer service at a reasonable price. Dealers, with shareholders to satisfy before customers, sometimes fall down in this regard.

if you are leaving an indepenants and going to a main dealer, any VAG group retailer or centre is a good choice. the training you will recieve from the group academy is the very best. you will find every course you attend as a delegate is for customer satisfaction, (the whole point of training) once you have completed service technician and qualified technician, you can go for master tech, then if the retailer has phaeton and toureg you will do even more courses.
i'm not on bonus from vag, i just have a little inside vag knowledge.

put all their techniciains and apprentices through the academy. the training is more for the brand knowledge and to ensure you understand what where and when about the product you see everyday, the courses are full of structure and delivered by a group of trainers who love the brand.

got the offer for the job but turned it down based on they offered me £5400 less than im on now so i turned them down!! they call it pay structure so if there are any yts lads out there u get good pay at the dealer's
