Windscreens and MOT's

Can any MOT boys out there make some sense of the rules,
Took car to MOT testers today it was failed on a 14mm bullseye in the wiper sweep but nothing was said about the 3 inch satnav stuck to the inside or the 2 tax disc holders n/s bottom corner or the air freshner tree dangling from interior mirror.

Aparrently these things dont count for the test but I would consider them far more important in the field of road saftey.

Also is not a satnav as distracting as a mobile phone

Hi Malcolm,
If any damage or sticker/object larger than 10mm in the wiper sweep directly in front on the steering wheel (290mm wide) then its a fail, all other damage/objects (except parking stickers) larger than 40mm in the rest of the swept zone should produce a failure.
Tester should have failed it for the dangly tree, but maybe thought as he has already failed he didn't need to (more typing !)
If the satnav was mounted inside the swet area that should have failed as well.

Hi,

It's an understatement to say the driver's view criteria are not well thought out. A 75mm satnav fixing in the wiper sweep should fail, likewise the tree air freshener if it won't fit in a 40mm circle. The two licence holders could pass even if they are in the wiper sweep, provided they are 'Official' eg tax disc ,disabled permit or similar.
However the customer will only have to remove them for the duration of the test. Most will put them back before leaving the testing station car park.
We have the same situation with cherished no.plates with illegal spacing. Most customers change them for the test and some refit the illegal originals before leaving our car park.
Some people regard the test as an imposed inconvenience rather than anything to do with road safety. Make it bi-annual and they will think the government agrees with them.
