engine reconditioners

I need an engine for a peugeot 306 1.8 2000, can anyone recomend a good reconditioners that supply exchange units?

Hi Chris
I only use VEGE engines. They give twelve month unlimited mileage guarantee and are top quality. You can deal direct or through a local distributor, the price is the same either way.

Ive used Vege before with good products.

More recently ive had 2 engines from Ivor Searl and both have been good.

They are also able to overhaul your unit if its not one they keep in stock.

I wouldn't recommend Vege at all.I had a short engine for a Range Rover P38,after a while it developed a tapping noise,which the customer was very annoyed about.I contacted my supplier who then spoke to Vege,who told them to tell me to replace the lifters,which they would supply & they would pay about £35 per hour for my time.The lifters never arrived so i ended up getting some myself,spent half the day fitting them only to start up & still have the same tapping noise.I said to them before hand that i wasn't sure where the noise was coming from.I had another spare second hand rocker shaft,which i repalced & the tapping noise was sorted.I told them that the noise was still present after replacing the lifters & that the noise was caused by the rockers.They said that they would send me down a replacement rock shaft(which arrived & was a used one) & that they would pay for replacing that,but NOT for replacing the lifters or the gaskets & lifters etc.I argued that they had told me to replace the lifters, but they point blank refused to pay for any of it .The only thing that i got off them was the second hand rock shaft.
The customer was going mental on me with the time that it took to get sorted,(because the parts never arrived),threatening to sue me for supplying faulty goods.Just to top it off the customer got a speeding ticket whilst he had my courtesy car.
I would never recommend VEGE to anyone & other people that i have spoken to since have had similar experiences.
This experience with Vege cost me a lot of money & wasted time & wasted a lot in phone calls to them .It also caused me to lose what was a good customer.
I hope that other people don't get any problems with any of their engines as their attitude was totally wrong.

Have you the confidence to rebuild the engine yourself, bradford grinders will rebore the block, regrind crankshaft & supply all the parts you need, they will overhaul the head if you want, this is the road we take & is a good earner.HTH Roger. Bradford Grinders 01274 733141.

I have just used an Ivor Searle head on a broken cambelt Vectra, no problem at all, top marks to them !!

I concur with everything that Andrew West has to say about Vege.The two engines i've had from them have either been of the incorrect specification or have failed within the first 3/4 of a mile ,which in itself wouldn't have been such a disaster if not for the way that the so called 'warranty' was handled by the company; and in particular one of their staff members whose name i bill not mention.Our most recent incident is ongoing as we speak and is as exhausting as the last because of the company's reluctance to accept our informed diagnosis of the failure and to take the appropriate action.We also will no doubt be paid £35 an hour for diagnosis and removal and refit due to a faulty engine which at book times I will lose heavily on,If I havn't already lost enough by having the car in the workshop for over a week more than quoted .To top it off the customers hire car cost is rising along with his temper!My confidence in the replacement engine (which has yet to arrive)is also waining.

I can Recommend R.E. Arnett engineering in Doncaster (01302 323931). We have had Vege engines in the past with few problems but a warranty claim is a nightmare! Arnett's can, and will carry out any level of re-build and their quality is very good. On the occasions when mistakes have been made they have always pulled out all the stops to resolve the issue.

Thanks for the input guys, customer has decided he can only afford a second hand one so thats what he's getting.
Normally we would do a rebuild but this was damaged by water after the rains and split a liner so I wouldn't trust it again.

Chris i hope the customer is supplying his own engine, if it is going to be delivered to your premises make sure it has been paid for in advance don`t pay for it yourself otherwise you will be responsible. i don`t know if you are aware of the fact but you have to be very careful. One of my customers bought a second hand engine, when it arrived here it was the wrong engine code, 2nd engine wrong, third engine wrong, fourth engine wrong and then uplifted by police!
I am just glad it wasn't my money paying for all these and the carriage costs.

Contact Dave Hill if you are supplying the S/H engine, I think he may put you off doing that. Get the customer to do it.
