Imported VW Golf 1.6 WVWZZZ1JZ2P385924 built 01/02

Hello lads,
I've had a new customer recommended today who has imported a January 2002 (built) VW Golf to this country from Cyprus. The car was obviously built in Germany, but to Japanese spec and then exported to Japan. It was then imported to Cyprus and now back here. The lady came to me with a list of things to do including:-
Certificate of compliance
Device to alter anti theft from Jap to UK spec
SVA test
Complete V55/5
Complete customs & excise form
New speedometer (to MPH)

She only wants me to fit the new speedo, but it would be nice to advise her about the other things.
Can anyone please tell me
1. Is a new speedo absolutely necessary or can I just stick a MPH 'face' over the KPH one?
2. If so, where can I get a new 'face'?
3. If a new 'face' can be fitted what about the odometer? Is it okay that it still reads kilometers?
4. If none of the above and a new MPH speedo is required, is it 'plug and play' or will it need 'coding' at a dealer?

I would appreciate any help with the above, I'm not an MOT station and have no knowledge of importing vehicles.

Hi Colin

I notice no-one else has replied yet so I may be of some help.

I did some SVA prep a good few years ago and only put new faces on the speedos. There was a company who produced the new faces but I have no record of it now. Have you tried a Google search?

I do not have any info on the other points you raised - sorry.

Hi there, do a google search for a company called "MPH" (i sure thats what they are called)
brillant company,they realy know there stuff.
If no luck I will find their number for you.

If you fit a new Speedo head it will need to go to the Dealers ( or someone with programming equipment ) As the immobiliser is usually in the speedo head. ( unless the jap version is different which I Doubt ) I would think the Immo is the same in both countries unless its turned off in Japan. ??

I would fit a face or speedo converter. As I would think that the Dealers would tell you that they cannot Tell you which MPH Type Dash fits to that car as its listed to have the KMH dash fitted. ( You know that dealers can only supply parts by part no, they have no idea if a number isn't listed )

Personally I would think that the job isn't worth getting involved with doing part of the job. ??
Like everything else it will take you longer to find out how to do it and what needs doing than to actually do the job.

i wonder if the device to alter Anti theft to uk spec is the frequency of the remote controls. ?? as uk is usualy 415 MHZ and Foreign are 315 MHZ

Is it Really worth the Hassle. ??

I know what you mean Tony, I've already spent more time on this than any money I might make, but I take pride in at least trying to give people answers when I say I will.
I haven't even touched on the other questions I asked in my first post!

We have fitted a few of these systems on some Imported vehicles for a local car dealer, They bought the kit inc a PDA to program them after fitting which doesn't always seem necessary, Which is good because as soon as the PDA battery goes flat it loses all the information and has to be reprogrammed itself.
