Should MOT test stations be aloud to carryout failure repairs?

Hi All

Have a read of the article on Autowired, some interesting facts, could the delay of the report by the government indicate a big change on the way?

...dunno about anyone else, but my failure rate is nowhere near 21.6%.

I think the last quote says it all:

People DO NOT maintain their cars to the same level as in the past. Lights, tyre pressures, levels etc are often ignored because cars are so reliable.
They do not understand their part in the maintenance process, and expect a garage to do it all in one, twelve month service, whereas in the past vehicles had at least one service every six months.

People get what they deserve in my humble opinion!

be interesting to know what they failed on at the initial test,
my guess would be
1,head light aims - not part of servicing?
2,bulb failure - customers not checking
3,incorrect headlight pattern - customer fitted incorrectly.
4,front tyres below 1.6mm - worn inner edges - tracking not checked,and again customers not checking their tyres.
5,washers not working - customers not topping up reservoir.
as tony said,"they do not understand their part in the maintenance process"
could go on & on..........

It is very simple why our failure rate is high,most of our failures are due to lights/bulbs out,Have a look on the system and it shows what the failure rate is on each item.I am in Spain at the moment so no access to MOT system,will check when i get back and post the FULL facts.
I have had an ITV done on my vehicle here in Spain,Facillitys are government run with a drive through system,the presenter can drive the vehicle through themselves as i did.Its a DIFFERENT test,to my mind not as thorough as ours

The figures quoted are VOSA`s figures so unless VOSA are not doing their QC job properly these are all justified & genuine fails. The question should be, why is the rest of the EU so lax.
As for the accident rates through mechanical defect I remember from a previous meeting there are "Hotspot" countries with a higher incidence than others,I believe the UK being the lowest.So some standardization and overall inspecting authority is obviously needed. My suggestion would be the rest of EU goes to 3-1-1 and VOSA becomes the inspecting authority.

However, after Gordon s trouncing in the elections he may well be prepared to throw us to the lions whilst crying that he "feels our pain".
Below are the figures in %. No numbers are given as to the amount of tests nationwide and these figure relate to class 3/4/7 only. There is a slight anomaly in that class seven requires additional tyre checks and this may influence the figure for that CG.

What is interesting is our average tests per day is 12.50 and the VTS Scheme is 2.27 !!! so ours always flags as abnormal anyone else get that?

And in answer to the original question,yes we should be allowed to carry out repairs.

Yes Harry our average tests per day is around 17 per tester (allways 2 testers on 2 lanes) making a station average of around 30 per day. There is no way we do this many, but it logs a PRS as two tests, and we allways issue a fail even if we fit a bulb during the test.

Hi Nigel
I cannot understand why the national scheme average tests per day is so low? Thats what strikes me as strange.
I do know that some of the report items have now been disregarded as they were found to give a false impressions. Just wondered if I am reading it right?
